PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi woman believed to have ties to a street gang has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for her involvement in a 2015 kidnapping. News outlets report 30-year-old Sherry Lynn Emile was sentenced Tuesday on one charge each of kidnapping and conspiracy to commit kidnapping. Emile pleaded guilty to both in December. ACWORTH, Ga. (AP) — Two police officers were standing near a Georgia cellphone tower when they noticed a man falling from the sky. News outlets report Brian Sims, of Savannah, and Stephen Ahlquist, of Lilburn, were arrested Jan. 18 on trespassing charges for BASE jumping from a 300-foot (90-meter) cellphone tower in Acworth. BASE jumping refers to leaping from a building, among other fixed structures. An arrest warrant says officers initially only had the first jumper, Sims, in custody, as Ahlquist was still in the air. NEW YORK (AP) — The late Ursula K. Le Guin is among the finalists for a PEN America literary award. Le Guin, who died earlier this week at age 88, is a nominee for the best book of essays. She was cited for her collection "No Time to Spare: Thinking About What Matters." Others up for awards include Ta-Nehisi Coates and Kevin Young for the best book of 2017 and Ron Chernow, author of "Grant," for biography. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida could make it harder to raise taxes or fees in the future under a proposed constitutional amendment that cleared the Florida House. The House on Thursday voted 80-29 in favor of a measure that would require the Florida Legislature to approve tax hikes by a two-thirds vote. The proposal is a top priority for Gov. A former star of the Disney XD series “Zeke and Luther” has been arrested in connection with a series of armed robberies, the Burbank Police Department said Thursday. Adam Hicks, who played Luther on the series, was arrested Wednesday and is being held on $350,000 bail, the department said.
