CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Board of Education has confirmed the appointment of a new CEO of the city's public schools, officially replacing the district's previous head who resigned. Janice Jackson on Wednesday became the first graduate, teacher and parent of Chicago's public schools to lead the district in decades. Rich Cherry, the Chief Operating Officer of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science’s museum project has resigned his position. According to an Academy spokesperson, Cherry, who has been in the position for just under a year, will remain on with the project through the end of February. The San Francisco Employees’ Retirement System’s governing board took tentative steps toward selling some of its $559 million stake in fossil fuel companies Wednesday, agreeing to instruct its staff to begin assessing how the fund will define its “riskiest and dirtiest” investments. Attorneys for 67-year-old Vernon Madison on Wednesday argued a judge should not have sentenced Madison to death when jurors recommended life imprisonment. Jared Polis are leading a bipartisan push urging President Donald Trump to reinstate an Obama-era policy discouraging federal prosecutors from targeting individuals involved in the marijuana trade in states that have legalized the drug. Olivia Cole, the Emmy-winning star of the original “Roots” miniseries, has died at the age of 45. The actress died on Friday at her home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, according to her agent Susie Schwarz of SDB Partners. Born November 26, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee, Cole got her start in acting on the CBS soap “Guiding Light” in 1969. Her breakout role, however, came a few years later on the hit ABC miniseries “Roots” in 1977.

Jerry Brown has sent a letter to the UC Board of Regents urging them to reject a proposed increase in tuition at the University of California's 10 campuses. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — A new map says an earthquake fault runs under the world-famous Rodeo Drive shopping district in Beverly Hills. The California Geological Survey map released earlier this month used additional information to track a fault that originally was thought to end on the city's western edge. The Los Angeles Times reports Wednesday that the Santa Monica fault zone actually extends another mile from West Los Angeles through the Beverly Hills central district and into the civic center area.
