BERLIN (AP) — Police say they have detained a 46-year-old woman after they found two dead babies in her apartment in a village in eastern Germany. They said in a statement Wednesday the two infants died "quite a while ago," and that criminal acts could not be ruled out. Police said they were tipped off Tuesday night about one dead baby, but when they searched the apartment in Benndorf in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, they found another dead infant. HONOLULU (AP) — The Coast Guard says an Australian man sailing in a homemade boat was rescued off the coast of Hawaii after he was blown off course on a journey home. Coast Guard officials say the 62-year-old man was in a 30-foot (9-meter) sailboat and flagged down a commercial passenger boat nearly 4 miles (6 kilometers) from Maui on Sunday afternoon. Fifteen other people were injured across France, including four in a "serious condition," the ministry said Wednesday. NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — State police are investigating after an officer fired a gun after responding to a gas station robbery. Local media outlets reported that the shooting happened about 4:45 a.m. Wednesday in North Charleston. North Charleston police and Charleston County sheriff's deputies had responded to the robbery. Initial reports indicated there were no serious injuries. The State Law Enforcement Division was handling the investigation. SLED spokesman Thom Berry said no other details were immediately available.

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) — Southern Indiana authorities say a man who stowed away on an Ohio River barge was rescued after nearly freezing to death in frigid weather. BERLIN (AP) — The recent influx of mostly young, male migrants into Germany has led to an increase in violent crime in the country, according to a government-funded study published Wednesday. The study used figures from the northern state of Lower Saxony to examine the impact of refugee arrivals on crime in 2015 and 2016, a period when the number of violent crimes reported increased by 10.4 percent. COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — A Clarkson man is accused of using customers' Social Security numbers to create bogus accounts for stealing money from the rent-to-own store he was managing in Columbus. The Columbus Telegram reports that 43-year-old Michael Schnelle is charged with identity theft and related theft crimes. His lawyer didn't immediately return a call Wednesday from The Associated Press. Schnelle's next court hearing is scheduled for Jan. 11. Authorities say a store audit uncovered around $250,000 in losses in missing merchandise.

FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) — A judge has ruled that media organizations will not be allowed to attend the initial court appearance of a teenage boy accused of fatally shooting his parents, sister and a family friend on New Year's Eve. The 16-year-old boy was due to make the appearance Tuesday in Family Court, where hearings are normally closed to the public. TAYLOR, Mich. (AP) — Frigid temperatures are blamed for causing pipes to rupture in three public buildings in a Detroit suburb. Taylor Mayor Rick Sollars says problems started last week, with pipes breaking at City Hall, the Lakes of Taylor Golf Club and a park activity building. Water poured into the buildings for several hours. Sollars says no one was in the buildings when the pipes burst. Damage is estimated at more than $100,000. City Hall has since reopened, but Sollars says events likely will be canceled for a few months at the golf club.

DETROIT (AP) — The U.S. auto industry's historic growth streak may be ending, but demand for new cars and trucks remains healthy as the new year begins. U.S. sales of new vehicles are expected to fall 2 percent to 17.1 million in 2017, according to Kelley Blue Book. DEPOE BAY, Ore. (AP) — A 19-year-old man suffering from an unknown medical issue was rescued by helicopter just south of Depoe Bay. The Register-Guard reports the Depoe Bay Fire District says low tide Tuesday allowed the man to be rescued from a reef in Big Whale Cover that is typically underwater. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter made the rescue once firefighters had responded to the scene.
