A year after her husband, a popular high school teacher, was shot and killed while hiking in an East Bay park, Nancy Ruenzel isn’t angry. Ruenzel, an English and journalism teacher at the Athenian School in Danville, was shot to death Nov. 25, 2014, while hiking in Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserve. CLEVELAND (AP) — Family members of a 12-year-old black boy who was carrying a pellet gun when he was fatally shot by a white police officer gathered Sunday for a vigil in Cleveland one year later. A grand jury is hearing testimony to determine whether criminal charges should be filed against the rookie patrolman who shot Tamir and his training officer. Footage recorded by a surveillance camera showed Loehmann shooting Tamir within two seconds of a patrol car skidding to a stop just feet from the boy.

(AP) — The Omaha school district wants to know if parents and principals would support using metal detectors or drug-sniffing dogs in schools. The district has been using metal detectors at certain high school basketball games since 2010, and police officers are stationed in all middle and high schools. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans police have identified a man accused of shooting a medical student who stopped an apparent kidnapping. Police say 21-year-old Euric Cain of New Orleans is wanted on charges of armed robbery, second-degree kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder.
