Southwest Airlines Co. reported Friday a surprise decline in third-quarter load factor, as the supply of seats outgrew demand. Load factor declined to 83.9% from 84.8% a year ago, while the FactSet consensus was for an increase to 85.0%, as September load factor fell to 80.5% from 81.7%. Third quarter capacity rose 3.9% to 40.57 billion available seat miles, while traffic increased 2.7% to 34.02 billion revenue passenger miles.
