Women holding the line in Capital Region labor movements
The Capital Region is home to large labor unions, including the Civil Service Employees Association, New York State United Teachers and Teamsters Joint Council 18. Women have figured prominently in organized labor ever since Irish washer woman Kate Mullany started the Collar Laundry Union in 1864 and led a strike that resulted in a 25-cent raise for the laundry workers — all women. More than 150 years later, women are in the forefront of both the movement and in major wins for workers.
