Cornerstones: Historic Albany building has kept its character
Today, 44 Central Ave., Albany, is an office building, home to the Preservation League of New York State. Its exterior brick is worn, and its profile plain, especially compared to its immediate neighbor, 40 Central Ave., which boasts a fresh coat of burgundy paint, a fancy cornice and bay windows. But both four-story buildings, built circa 1817, play important roles in Albany history, and only 44 has remained largely unaltered as two centuries passed and the city changed radically around it.
