Fashion flap: Serena OK with French Open despite catsuit ban

NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams says her relationship with the French Open is fine despite the Grand Slam tournament's plan to ban her skin-tight black catsuit. Williams says she has spoken with the French Tennis Federation president, who said in Tennis Magazine the outfit would no longer be accepted. Williams said Saturday she no longer needs to wear it because she found that compression tights also work to keep her blood circulating. She dealt with a health scare related to blood clots after giving birth to her daughter last Sept. Читать дальше...

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Court records say a former Roman Catholic priest dubbed "Monsignor Meth" because he ran a meth distribution ring has failed a drug test and may have to return to prison. The Hartford Courant reports that court documents show Former Bridgeport Diocese Monsignor Kevin Wallin recently tested positive for amphetamine at the facility where he's been receiving treatment. Probation officer Jose Vargas is urging the court to suspend Wallin's supervised release. Wallin is expected to appear before a judge next week. Читать дальше...

'Don't let your guard down,' federal officials tell Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) — Federal officials said Saturday that torrential rains are now the biggest threat to Hawaii after a once-powerful hurricane that threatened the island state was downgraded to a tropical storm, and they urged people to continue to take the storm seriously. "Today's message to the citizens of Hawaii is don't let your guard down," Brock Long, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said during a telephone briefing in Washington. Marriott, whose namesake founding family is active in the Mormon church, has been putting both the Bible and the Book of Mormon in its rooms since opening its first hotel in the late 1950s. US OPEN '18: On the clock! 25-second countdown's Slam debut

Any discussion of the serve clocks that will make their Grand Slam debut during the U.S. Open's main draw starting Monday, and could become a regular part of tennis as soon as next year, inevitably turns to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. They are two of the greatest players in history — and two of the slowest between points. For one thing, Djokovic's incessant bouncing of the ball before a service toss delays things. So do Nadal's habitual mannerisms: the touching of the nose, the tucking of the hair... Читать дальше...

Former pastor claims sex abuse against televangelist

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A lawsuit filed by a former associate pastor at an Ohio megachurch claims televangelist Ernest Angley sexually abused and harassed him over a 10-year period starting in 2004. The allegations detailed in a complaint filed Wednesday in Akron by Brock Miller, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, were previously reported by the Akron Beacon Journal in January. Miller claims Angley, who recently turned 97, forced him in 2004 to get a vasectomy as a condition of his employment, inspected... Читать дальше...

ICE issuing more immigrant ankle monitors. But do they work?

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Federal authorities' shift away from separating immigrant families caught in the U.S. illegally now means that many parents and children are quickly released, only to be fitted with electronic monitoring devices — a practice which both the government and advocacy groups oppose for different reasons. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is issuing thousands of 5.5-ounce (155-gram) ankle monitors that immigrants call grilletes, or electronic shackles, spelling big profits for GEO Group... Hold the Mayo! Florida town is changing its name temporarily

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Mayo, Florida is holding the mayo, at least for a few days. The mayor of this tiny town of less than 1,500 residents, located where Florida's Panhandle morphs into a peninsula, is announcing Saturday that the city is switching its name to "Miracle Whip." But it's a joke. The name change started as a secret, tongue-in-cheek marketing proposal for the Kraft Heinz-owned mayonnaise-alternative. Eugene's long-neglected millrace getting a major makeover

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — For the long-neglected Eugene Millrace, the University of Oregon's new Knight science campus could be an unexpected boon. The narrow waterway, which runs between Franklin Boulevard and the Willamette River, has a rich history. In recent decades, however, it has been best known for its murky and stagnant water, its blackberry- and horsetail-covered banks, and as a receptacle for garbage, dirty stormwater from nearby parking lots, and the occasional pledge from UO fraternities.... Why some college sports scandals don't draw NCAA penalties

The question often comes up when a serious scandal hits college sports: Where is the NCAA? Why isn't the governing body of major college sports, you know, governing? Ohio State suspended Urban Meyer for three games for mishandling allegations of domestic violence against one of his assistants, but it is doubtful the school, coach or athletic director — also suspended — will face penalties from the NCAA. Meanwhile, 13 North Carolina football players were suspended by the NCAA earlier this month — some as many as four games ... Читать дальше...

Arcia was mobbed on the field by his teammates after he put an end to the 5-hour, 36-minute contest. Starter Sam? Darnold solid again, Jets lose to Giants 22-16

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Sam Darnold spent a few minutes chatting with Joe Namath and only wished he had more time. At this rate, though, the youngster will have plenty more opportunities down the line. Darnold led the Jets on two touchdown drives, moving closer to securing the starting quarterback job in a 22-16 loss to the New York Giants on Friday night. That came after Darnold and the Jets' other quarterbacks met briefly on the field with the man who has led the team to its only Super Bowl win — 50 seasons ago. Читать дальше...

Newton survives scare to beat Patriots

Charlotte, N.C. Cam Newton gave the Panthers an early injury scare before returning to help Carolina defeat New England in a preseason game. Royals give Indians' closer a rude sendoff

Kansas City, Mo. Ryan O'Hearn and Hunter Dozier hit back-to-back home runs leading off the ninth inning against Cleveland closer Cody Allen to lift the Kansas City Royals over the Indians 5-4 on Friday night. After a broken water pipe near the outfield fountains led to a half-hour delay in the fourth inning, the Royals and Indians put on a splashy finish. Cleveland's Yonder Alonso hit his second homer of the game in the eighth, a two-run shot for a 4-3 lead. Alonso also had a solo shot in the fourth... Читать дальше...
