70 years after Babe Ruth's death, fans still flock to grave

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. (AP) — Amid the serene graves at Gate of Heaven Cemetery sits the one where visitors leave baseballs and bats instead of bouquets, tributes to a baseball superstar who still outshines others seven decades after his death. It's the resting place of Babe Ruth, the indelible slugger and larger-than-life personality who died Aug. 16, 1948. Considered by many to be the greatest player in baseball history, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox legend set home run records — 60 in one season... Читать дальше...

Astros hit 5 homers to end skid with 12-1 win over Rockies

HOUSTON (AP) — Throughout their five-game losing streak, the Houston Astros failed time and again to get a big hit when they needed it. They didn't have that problem Wednesday night. Evan Gattis and Tyler White hit two homers each, Yuli Gurriel added a two-run shot and the Astros broke out of their offensive slump in a huge way with a 12-1 win over the Colorado Rockies to end their skid. "We needed to have a little fun," manager A.J. Hinch said. "Obviously, nights like this produce that and the hits produce it. Читать дальше...

China sending trade envoy to Washington for talks

BEIJING (AP) — China is sending a trade envoy to Washington in a renewed effort to end a worsening tariff dispute that has raised worries it will chill global economic growth. The delegation led by a deputy commerce minister will visit in late August to discuss "issues of mutual concern," the Commerce Ministry announced Thursday. It gave no details of a possible agenda. The two governments are poised to impose a new round of tariff hikes on $16 billion of each other's goods next week in their worsening conflict over Beijing's technology policy.

Swanson fills void after Acuna's exit as Braves top Marlins

ATLANTA (AP) — Slugging rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. was hit by a pitch before he could take the Marlins deep again, but Dansby Swanson filled the power void for Atlanta, hitting a two-run homer that led the Braves to a 5-2 win over Miami on Wednesday. Acuna, who had hit leadoff homers in the last three games and homered in five straight games overall, didn't get a chance to extend the streak. Jose Urena plunked him on the left elbow with a fastball on his first pitch of the day, triggering a melee. Benches... Читать дальше...

Progress slow for USA Gymnastics in wake of Nassar scandal

BOSTON (AP) — Simone Biles is not here to save gymnastics. Or at least USA Gymnastics. The reigning Olympic champion understands how bumpy of a ride it has been for her sport's national governing body since she stepped off the podium in Rio de Janeiro two years ago, a fourth Olympic gold medal around her neck and the world at her feet. Biles doesn't really care. The 21-year-old revealed in January she is among the hundreds of athletes who were abused by Larry Nassar under the guise of medical treatment. Читать дальше...

Conditions of release not yet met for compound suspects

TAOS, N.M. (AP) — Three people accused of child abuse at a ramshackle desert compound remained jailed Wednesday as New Mexico authorities sought to satisfy the conditions of their release set by a judge. Among other things, authorities must find safe living arrangements for the defendants before they can leave jail. They also must wear ankle monitors and have regular contact with their attorneys. "The conditions for their release have not yet been met," Taos County spokesman Steve Fuhlendorf said Wednesday evening. Читать дальше...

NEW YORK (AP) — The nation's newsrooms are pushing back against President Donald Trump with a coordinated series of newspaper editorials condemning his attacks on "fake news" and suggestion that journalists are the enemy. The Boston Globe invited newspapers across the country to stand up for the press with editorials on Thursday, and several began appearing online a day earlier. Nearly 350 news organizations have pledged to participate, according to Marjorie Pritchard, op-ed editor at the Globe. In St. Читать дальше...

Paul Walker's brothers open to 'Fast' franchise return

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nearly five years after Paul Walker's death, his brothers say they're open to playing his character again in the "Fast and Furious" franchise. Producers asked Caleb and Cody Walker to fill in for their brother and help complete "Furious 7" after he died in a fiery off-set car crash in November 2013. His face was digitally superimposed onto his brothers' performances for scenes that Walker had not yet shot and in a modified ending in which his character Brian O'Conner drives off into the sunset. NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — People are saying 46 people overdosed Wednesday from a suspected bad batch of "K2" synthetic marijuana at or near a city park in Connecticut. No deaths were reported, but officials said two people had life-threatening symptoms. Most of the overdoses were on the New Haven Green, a popular, historic downtown park that borders part of Yale University, and officials said they expected the overdose total to increase. Police said they arrested a man believed to be connected to at least some of the overdoses. Читать дальше...

Pot taxes pick up in California but still far off target

LOS ANGELES (AP) — When it comes to the taxman, California's legal pot market is off to a sluggish start. Marijuana cultivation and excise tax collections hit $48 million between April and June, state officials announced Wednesday. That's a jump from the prior three months but well below the windfall envisioned by the state. Finance officials had estimated California would bank $185 million from excise and cultivation taxes in the first six months of broad legal sales, which kicked off Jan. 1. But collections by midyear hit only $82 million. Читать дальше...

MASON, Ohio (AP) — Novak Djokovic completed his comeback from elbow surgery by winning Wimbledon for the fourth time. He's inching closer to one of the few titles to elude him throughout his career. Djokovic overcame an upset stomach and a sluggish first set Wednesday, beating Adrian Mannarino 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 before heavy rain halted afternoon matches at the Western & Southern Open. The 10th-seeded Djokovic demonstrated he's back in form by winning Wimbledon title last month. Now he's trying to get his hard-court game ready for the U.S. Open... Читать дальше...

Vital US reservoir OK for now, but shortages are looming

DENVER (AP) — A vital reservoir on the Colorado River will be able to meet the demands of Mexico and Southwestern U.S. states for the next 13 months, but a looming shortage could trigger cutbacks in late 2019, officials said Wednesday. A forecast from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation echoes previous warnings that a nearly 20-year trend toward a drier regional climate coupled with rising demand could drain so much water from the Lake Mead reservoir that cutbacks would be mandatory. ATLANTA (AP) — Ronald Acuna Jr.'s streak of leadoff homers in three straight games ended when the Marlins' Jose Urena hit him with his first pitch, triggering a melee that led to benches and bullpens for Atlanta and Miami emptying twice. Urena and Braves manager Brian Snitker were ejected. Snitker had angry words for the pitcher as he led the first exodus from Atlanta's dugout toward the mound. Gordon breaks scoreless tie with HR in 12th, M's top A's 2-0

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Dee Gordon doesn't have many home runs this season. Two to be exact. So when Seattle's light-hitting utility player muscled up in the 12th inning, he celebrated by kissing both biceps as he stood in the dugout after crossing home plate. It was a good-natured gesture toward a few of Gordon's teammates who were ribbing him as he rounded the bases. After Alex Jones timeout, Twitter CEO mulls deeper changes

NEW YORK (AP) — A day after Twitter gave right-wing conspiratorialist Alex Jones a weeklong timeout, CEO Jack Dorsey is mulling deeper changes to the social media service that might limit the spread of fake news, misinformation and hate speech. Twitter joined other prominent tech companies in muzzling Jones, the founder of the Infowars site, who has used Twitter and other social outlets to spread false information. Twitter had resisted the move despite public pressure, but the holdout lasted less than two weeks.

Rizzo leads Cubs past Brewers 8-4

CHICAGO (AP) — It's purely about the math for Anthony Rizzo and the Chicago Cubs. A three-game lead is better than a one-game advantage, and that was all that mattered Wednesday. Officials remove special rules for gene therapy experiments

U.S. health officials are eliminating special regulations for gene therapy experiments, saying that what was once exotic science is quickly becoming an established form of medical care with no extraordinary risks. A special National Institutes of Health oversight panel will no longer review all gene therapy applications and will instead take on a broader advisory role, according to changes proposed Wednesday. The Food and Drug Administration will vet gene therapy experiments and products as it does with other treatments and drugs. Читать дальше...
