Infrastructure Malta has announced the planting of some 550 saplings on the site of the Santa Luċija tunnels, where about 300 mature trees were controversially removed in 2019. The trees were removed as part of excavation works, as the road tunnel was built up from a huge hole, rather than being bored. A roundabout and a jogging track were then built over the tunnels. The new saplings border the jogging track.

Manchester United have pencilled a friendly in Malta on August 3, reports in the UK said on Monday. The Times of Malta earlier this year had reported that the English champions were in talks with the Malta Tourism Authority over the possibility of bringing their first-team squad for a pre-season training on the islands. Novavax's COVID-19 jab is more than 90 percent effective, including against coronavirus variants, the vaccine maker said Monday after a large-scale US study. The jab "demonstrated 100% protection against moderate and severe disease, 90.4% efficacy overall," the company said in a statement, adding "the study enrolled 29,960 participants across 119 sites in the U.S. and Mexico to evaluate efficacy, safety and immunogenicity." EU-wide political party Volt has launched a campaign to recruit new members and candidates with a view to contesting the next General Election in Malta.  In a statement, Volt Malta announced its Run For Volt campaign, inviting the public to apply to become members and election candidates.  Volt Europa, spread over 29 countries with over 25,000 members, started life when the UK began Brexit proceedings in 2017, a reaction to what they describe as the “EU’s weakened political climate”. Earlier this month, the Finance Ministers of the most advanced economies, known as the Group of Seven (G7), backed a US proposal that calls for corporations around the world to pay a minimum tax rate of 15 per cent tax on earnings. Originally the US proposed a tax rate of 25 per cent but after negotiations they agreed to bring it down to 15 per cent. Just one new case of COVID-19 was reported on Monday as six patients recovered. In their daily update, the health authorities said 1,021 swab tests were conducted over the past 24 hours.  There were no new deaths, and the number of active cases is now down to just 54 people. There have now been a total of 419 deaths to date as well as 30,582 confirmed cases. Police are investigating a video that shows a man being savagely beaten by a group of aggressors in the middle of a main road.  A police spokesman said that on Sunday afternoon officers had received a report of an argument that began on Triq il-Korp tal-Pijunieri, in Buġibba which had turned into a violent brawl.   Video footage of the incident, sent to Times of Malta, shows a group of three men violently assault a man as he lay on the floor, while a fourth watches on.   In the video, the aggressors... A representative from the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit was momentarily taken into custody on Monday morning after she refused to name Keith Schembri and Adrian Hillman while testifying in court.  “You cannot pick and choose [what to testify about]," magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech told the FIAU representative as she ordered a court marshall to take her into custody for contempt of court.  “I feel sorry for her. Ned Beatty, the prolific and Oscar-nominated character actor known for roles in Network, Superman and Toy Story 3, has died aged 83, US media reported on Sunday. A new strategy for early school leavers has been launched for public consultation on Monday, with a working document set to lay out goals for the sector in the education department until 2030.   Education authorities say that, among other things, they plan to use data to target students that are deemed most likely to drop out of school.   While Malta still has one of the highest rates of early school leavers in the EU, with one in six students having quit school in their teens in 2019, it has also made strides in decreasing the phenomenon... Norman Darmanin Demajo has been elected as the new president on Youth Football Association president. The former Malta Football Association president replaces Fr Hilary Tagliaferro who felt that the time was right for him to step aside. Fr Hilary said that although the past two years have been very difficult, the Youth FA continued with its work despite the circumstance. Laine Tutane, 38 and her daughter Cherilyn Christmas, 13, were heading the leader board after Day One of the Royal Malta Golf Club's Ladies Golf Championship and Moya Hann Cup sponsored by MAC Cosmetics Malta. On the second day, Tutane and Christmas played side by side in perfect conditions, the scores being even for most of the round.
