Some 3,000 fig trees will be distributed to farmers across the island in a bid to counter the devastation caused by a parasite, Agriculture Parliamentary Secretary Clint Camilleri told the Times of Malta. The move comes as farmers have again raised concerns that the indigenous fig tree could soon face extinction if action is not taken. Concerned farmers have recently contacted the Times of Malta to sound the alarm about how locally grown figs could disappear from the market as thousands of trees have been decimated by a pest in a few years. On Yaji Mountain in southern China, they are checking in the pigs a thousand head per floor in high-rise 'hog hotels'. This is high rise pig farming at its most intense. High-rise buildings with lifts and 1,000 pigs per floor. Similar Hog farms - of two or three floors - have been tried in Europe, but many have been abandoned - largely because of public resistance to large, intensive farming. North Korea said it will hold a "ceremony" for the dismantling of its nuclear test site from May 23-25 in what would be a dramatic but symbolic event to set up leader Kim Jong Un's summit with US President Donald Trump next month. North Korea's foreign ministry said all of the tunnels at the country's north-eastern testing ground would be destroyed by explosion, and that observation and research facilities and ground-based guard units would also be removed. Migrant women in Malta have launched an initiative to become independent by cooking food and selling it through a truck that would visit different localities. The initiative, themed Saha, is backed by the Migrant Women Association, which found in a study that 85 per cent of migrant women wanted to find employment but felt locked out of the local job market. The research also indicated that the women had a passion for cooking and this led volunteers assisting the association to come up with the food truck idea. Читать дальше...

Lewis Hamilton will start from pole position in Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix after edging out Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas by just four hundredths of a second. Pope Francis wants Chile's bishops to owe up to the "devastating wounds" inflicted on the Church's credibility by a cover-up of clergy sexual abuse, serving notice that his coming meetings with them will be blunt. The Mrieħel bypass footbridge, which is still incomplete, can rake in just under €23,000 a month in advertising, according to rates quoted by the private operators. The government has warned Steel Structures Company Ltd to finish the project or face the consequences. Lifts, which according to the yet unpublished contract between Transport Malta and the company, had to be in place by February last year are still missing. The second edition of Iż-Żejtun Taħt in-Nar will be held around Żejtun’s main square tomorrow from 9am till noon. The activity marks the 76th anniversary of the tragedy that occurred in the square on May 2, 1942, during World War II when Luftwaffe Junkers 88 dropped a number of bombs,  including butterfly bombs, opposite the church and killed 27 parishoners. Waste recovery scheme operators Green MT continue to maintain "earlier reservations” about a drink container refund scheme announced last week, the company told Times of Malta. Green MT had warned that bottle deposit schemes did not always increase recycling rates, when the initiative was first brought up by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat. A former RAF pilot has written a book about a wartime decorated cabaret performer whom he never met, but whose spirit lives on in the memory of several Maltese people, roads and archives. Gżira United completed their first major signing when they reached an agreement with Brazilian defender Rodolfo Soares. The 32-year-old Soares had announed earlier this month that he was leaving his former club Hibernians to seek pastures new after seven years with the club from Paola. Maltese lecturer Noel Cachia recently published a book in Maltese entitled Stejjer ta’ Dari u tal-Lum. A total of 325 copies were sold and all proceeds have been donated to Bjorn Formosa on behalf of ALS Malta. The donation was presented to Mr Formosa during a small ceremony held at the Institute for Community Services at MCAST. The book is a collection of short novels that reveal and portray experiences and show the emotions of childhood. A truck coming down wrong way in Carmel Street, corner with Main Street, St Julian’s on Saturday knocked down the wall of a private residence. A reader sent in the following pictures of the mess and said that an arch of historical value was also destroyed in the process. St Julian's mayor Guido Dalli said that four houses in the middle of Carmel Street were being redeveloped and the works were causing a lot of damage, partly because of the narrowness of the roads, that being the oldest part of the locality. An event called Canta e Cammina (Sing and Walk), combining a performance by Gozitan choir Schola Cantorum Jubilate with literature readings and an informative tour, will be held today at the Augustinian cloister of St Mark’s Priory, Rabat. A 35-year-old man from Georgia is being arraigned in court on Saturday, charged with aggravated theft from a residence and a shop in San Ġwann and Valletta, the police said. They said on Saturday the arrest followed months of investigations by the Criminal Investigations Department. The man was in Malta illegally.
