Grand Harbour boatsmen blockade Valletta ferry

Plans to extend a Grand Harbour ferry service's operating hours for tonight's Notte Bianca appear to be sinking after rival boatsmen blockaded the vessel's Valletta docking quay this evening. Small boat owners reportedly blockaded the Lascaris Wharf quay in protest at what they feel is unfair competition by Valletta Ferry Services, which is offering a shuttle service coinciding with tonight's Notte Bianca activities.  Eyewitnesses told Times of Malta that as of 8.20pm, boatsmen were ferrying passengers... Malta has established diplomatic relations with the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea. Signing ceremonies to establish relations were held during bilateral meetings held on the fringes of the Our Ocean Conference, held this past week in Malta. Anti-Kremlin activists across Russia call for Putin to quit

Police detained more than a hundred opposition activists today for taking part in a wave of anti-Kremlin protests across Russia in support of jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny ahead of a presidential election in March. Under grey skies and intermittent rain, over two thousand people gathered in central Moscow's Pushkin Square and chanted "Russia will be free" and "Russia without Putin" before walking towards the Kremlin and parliament. Norway to pay male and female football internationals equally

A new agreement between Norway's football association and the country's international players will lead to men and women receive the same financial compensation for representing their country, with the men making a financial contribution to the women's team. In what players' union boss Joachim Walltin believes to be the first deal of its kind, the Norwegian FA has announced that it is almost doubling the remuneration pot for the women, from 3.1 million Norwegian crowns (€330,000) to a total of 6 million crowns. Armed thief holds up Msida store

A man armed with a "metal object" held up a store in Msida this afternoon, police said. The man ordered a 54-year-Siġġiewi man behind the counter to hand over cash before making a quick getaway. Police were called to tthe scene on Triq l-Isqof Caruana at around 2.30pm, they said. Nobody was hurt. Police investigations are ongoing.

Maltese professor made vice-president of international maritime law tribunal

Leading international maritime law professor David Attard has been elected vice-president of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Prof. Attard will serve a three-year term in the post. Many hurt as car hits pedestrians outside London's Natural History Museum

Updated 5.20pm Several people have been injured after a car reportedly ploughed into people outside London's Natural History Museum. Scotland Yard said that "a number of pedestrians have been injured" in an incident in Exhibition Road in South Kensington shortly after 2.20pm. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Officers are on scene, and the London Ambulance Service have been called. ‘Jerome taught us what life and love really mean’

Jerome Frendo, known for his resilience, passed away yesterday morning after three bouts with cancer in three years. The family of the 20-year-old broke the news on Facebook, with his younger brother, Jethro, urging prayers for his relatives. “Even though it hurts very much to see him go, I personally think it was the right thing to happen. A 26-year-old Swatar resident has been crowned Miss Princess of the World 2017, beating contestants from 39 other countries. Embellishing works to Floriana's 'Biskuttin' area at the entrance to Valletta have been completed, with the area leading up to Triton square now reopened to the public. Member of Catalan government calls for 'ceasefire' with Madrid

A member of Catalonia's separatist-led government has called for a "ceasefire" with Spain to decrease tensions after a disputed referendum on independence by the prosperous region. Santi Vila, Catalonia's regional chief for business, told Cadena SER Radio he is pushing for "a new opportunity for dialogue" under "a ceasefire" with Spanish authorities. 13 charged with pickpocketing

Five men and and eight women this morning pleaded not guilty to a series of thefts which took place in recent months. They were also charged with forming part of an organised crime ring. The 13 men and women, all Bulgarians and whose ages range between 21 and 33, were arrested on Thursday afternoon following days of observation by the police. At the time of the arrest, the Bulgarians were in possession of a substantial amount of euros and sterling and other foreign currency and mobile phones that had been reported stolen. Danish police find body parts including head in submarine probe

Divers have found the head, legs and clothes of a Swedish journalist who was killed after going on a trip with an inventor on his submarine, police in Denmark said. Copenhagen police investigator Jens Moeller Jensen said the body parts were found on Friday in plastic bags, with a knife and "heavy metal pieces" to make them sink, near where Kim Wall's naked, decapitated torso was found in August. Police seek public assistance to locate hold-up suspect

The police called for public assistance to locate Ramazan Hysa, wanted in connection with Friday’s hold-up at Diamonds International in Pjazza Tigne, Sliema. Two armed and masked men demanded jewellery but a shop assistant resisted. Two people were injured in the hold-up. The police said this morning they were still looking for people in connection with the case, including Mr Hysa, a 24-year-old man with an Albanian passport,. Death toll rises to 24 after Pakistan shrine suicide bombing

The death toll from a bombing at a Shiite shrine in south-west Pakistan has increased to 24 after four victims died in hospital, police said. A suicide bomber struck the shrine packed with worshippers in a remote village in Jhal Magsi district, about 240 miles east of Quetta in Baluchistan province, on Thursday. Senior police officer Mohammad Iqbal said on Saturday that more than 20 victims were still being treated, some with critical wounds. The Islamic State group claimed the attack. Injured woman streaked out by escaped pig

A woman needed hospital treatment after being injured by an escaped pig. The 61-year-old received wounds to both her legs after the incident in Heathfield Lane, Darlaston, West Midlands, on Wednesday. West Midlands Police said it attended at 9.26am, after reports of "a pig on the loose". Officers and an ambulance crew managed to deal with the animal and the "pig was taken back to its pen", according to the force.
