Economy Minister Chris Cardona’s closest aides have been given new appointments, the Times of Malta is informed. Dr Cardona appointed Mario Azzopardi, the head of his private secretariat under the previous Labour administration, as his advisor. PN leader Adrian Delia was this afternoon sworn in as Opposition leader. He took his oath flanked by his wife and five children. Dr Delia arrived at the Palace in Valletta more than an hour later. A 60-year-old man from Fgura was grievously injured in an occupational accident this afternoon. The police said the accident happened at 4.15pm at a factory at the Bulebel industrial zone in Żejtun. The man injured his hand with a machine while working. He was take to hospital by ambulance.

The Catalan government has submitted to the regional parliament the final results of a disputed referendum on secession from Spain, a necessary step before declaring independence as separatist politicians have promised. Spain's central authorities have deemed the referendum illegal and a constitutional court suspended it. Divers who experienced difficulties while diving in Gozo today were brought to safety by the Armed Forces of Malta. The AFM said in a statement its helicopter helped recover the divers and they were brought to safty by the army’s safe and rescue launch.

A sports car enthusiast has been sentenced to an effective jail term of one year over a massive car crash 12 years ago on the Salina coast road, which left a young man with a permanent disability and shattered dreams of becoming a dancer. A Libyan armed group has claimed victory over Italian-backed militias paid to staunch the flow of migrants to Europe from the coastal city of Sabratha. The Anti-Isis Operations Room, created last year to clear Sabratha of Islamic State militants, said in a statement it had taken control of the city from the Martyr Anas al-Dabashi and Brigade 48 militias after a weeks-long battle. Over the summer, Italy began funnelling resources to the two militias after they agreed to stop facilitating the flow of migrant boats and start blocking them instead.

The new artistic director for the national dance company is looking at tripling ŻfinMalta’s audience in three years. This will be quite a feat for Paolo Mangiola, who hopes that people could one day be as familiar with dance language as they are with film. Bayern Munich have announced the appointment of Jupp Heynckes as coach until the end of the season. The 72-year-old, who succeeds Carlo Ancelotti, has had three previous spells in charge of the Bundesliga giants, most recently when he led them to the league, cup and Champions League treble in 2013. They were nominated following the resignation of Matthew Mangion and Boris Xerri prior to the election for the PN leader. A boy who was evacuated from the Caribbean with his Maltese grandmother when the catastrophic hurricane Irma destroyed their house will be celebrating his sixth birthday in Malta. Artist Claire Attard Vella is exhibiting a number of works at the Ministry For The Economy, Investment & Small Business in Merchant Str., Valletta during tomorrow's Notte Bianca. Among the 11 works on exhibit are Harlequine's Mistress, a 69 x 79 cms, mixed media and Exposé, a 40 x 60 cms mixed media on canvas. A young man who regained his freedom just last month is back in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of trying to steal a car. Abdikarim Isman Omar, a 21-year old Somali national, was caught in the early hours of Thursday morning trying to "jump start the engine" of a parked van in Marsa, prosecuting officer inspector Daryl Borg told the court. A solar farm policy unveiled today by the Planning Authority aims to increase the generation of clean energy by up to 50MW peak and help reach the EU2020 target of having 10% of the total energy generation from renewable sources. Currently, this accounts to 6%.  Under this policy, areas with a minimum footprint of 1,000 square metres may qualify, including those outside development zone.
