Former MotoGP champion Hayden dies after cycling accident

Former MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden has died, five days after the American was hit by a car while cycling in eastern Italy, his Honda World Superbike team said. "It is with great sadness that Red Bull Honda... has to announce that Nicky Hayden has succumbed to injuries suffered during an incident while riding his bicycle last Wednesday," the team said. Funds for ‘artificial muscle’ research at Malta University

New research at the University will look into ways of creating ‘artificial muscle’ that can imitate precise human gestures and even lift heavy objects. The research could eventually give some answers to the challenge of developing robots with functions that emulate human motion. Following “a lot more research”, it could also come in handy during the development of lifelike prosthetics, Ruben Gatt, from the Metamaterials Unit, Faculty of Science, told this newspaper. Man arrested after Gzira 'shooting'

A man was arrested this evening after he allegedly fired a pellet gun at a British woman in Gzira. The incident happened at about 7.30pm. A man who was accompanying the woman chased the aggressor, who was later arrested. The gun was recovered by the police. The woman was not injured.

Eleven babies were born through IVF procedures last week alone, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this evening, calling for politicians to leave the matter to medical experts. Speaking at a Labour campaign event in Mġarr, Dr Muscat dismissed as “scaremongering” claims by Partit Demokratiku candidate and former Labour whip, Godfrey Farrugia that the proposed introduction of embryo freezing would pave the way for abortion. “Embryo freezing is already in our law, and allowed whenever specialists deem it necessary,” Dr Muscat said. US President Donald Trump made an historic visit to Jerusalem's Western Wall today, standing before the holiest place where Jews are permitted to pray and saying a few words before inserting a note between the monumental stones. He was accompanied by the Rabbi of the Western Wall, Shmuel Rabinowitz, who said on Israel Radio that he recited two psalms with the US leader. Discord between the eurozone's three largest countries is stalling the European Central Bank's efforts to come up with a way to force euro clearing out of London and put it under its watch, three sources told Reuters. Tourists had the shock of their lives when a young girl was pulled underwater by a sea lion as she sat on a dock near Vancouver, Canada. The shocking incident captured on camera first shows the girl watching the sea lion as it approached the edge of the dock. Medserv share price drops to near 2-year low

The MSE Share Index kicked-off the week in negative territory as it slipped by 0.19% to 4,622.994 points. Trading activity was broad as 14 equities traded, seven of which trended lower, four closed flat while another three shares edged higher. AFM receives third King Air aircraft, and new bomb disposal equipment

The Armed Forces of Malta today formally took delivery of a King Air maritime patrol aircraft and an explosive ordnance disposal robot. The €16 million investment was co-financed by the EU. The King Air is the third to be operated by the AFM. The other two were commissioned in 2011 and 2012 respectively,  when a new hangar was also built for fixed wing aircraft. A year since the disappearance of her husband, Phyllis Stewart is offering a €1,000 reward to anyone with information that would lead to his whereabouts. The owner of a restaurant in Mistra Bay has filed a judicial protest against the Police Commissioner, complaining that the police are failing to act against caravan owners who are illegally staying at the bay. Turkey and Russia signed a memorandum on lifting trade restrictions against each other, Turkish presidential sources said today, after Ankara and Moscow agreed at a meeting this month to settle trade disputes. PN promises one-time grant for young people to visit an EU country

A future Nationalist government will give every youth between the age of 18 and 21 a one-time grant to be used to visit any EU country of his choice. Speaking on Net TV, the party's spokesman on culture, Karl Gouder, said a PN government would invest in the cultural infrastructure that over time will include a new national theatre, a museum for modern and contemporary art, an academy of fine arts and an architecture and design centre. Eligible voters who have not received their voting document at home may call personally at their local police station to pick it up, the Electoral Commission said.   The documents may be picked up tomorrow from 4pm to 9 pm; Wednesday to Friday between 8am and 1pm, and between 3pm and 9 pm; on Saturday between 8am and 1pm and between 3pm and 10pm; or on Sunday between 8am and noon. Updated - Watch: Fierce fire at Sant' Antnin waste recycling plant

A fierce fire has broken out at the Sant' Antnin recycling plant in Marsascala, with eyewitnesses reporting that the main shed had been destroyed. The blaze was noted at about 1.30pm, produced a plume of thick smoke seen from all over Malta and even parts of Gozo.  No one appears to have been injured, according to initial reports. Man walks free after victim withdraws misappropriation complaint

A man accused of misappropriating €2,500 entrusted to him for the payment of registration tax on an imported vehicle was cleared of the charges after the criminal complaint was withdrawn by the victim.
