Real Madrid to face Juventus in Champions League final

Real Madrid survived an Atletico Madrid onslaught to reach the Champions League final this evening,  losing 2-1 on the night, but going through 4-2 on aggregate to set up a mouthwatering clash against Juventus. Atletico roared into a two-goal lead with a Saul Niguez header and Antoine Griezmann’s penalty, but Isco notched in the 42nd minute to dampen their hopes of a comeback. Teenage girl seriously injured in Għajn Dwieli tunnel crash

A 13-year-old girl was seriously injured this evening when two cars collided head-on in the Għajn Dwieli tunnel. The accident happened at about 9.30pm. Rescuers from the Civil Protection Department were called to free the girl from the wreckage of one of the cars. Three other persons were also hospitalised but their injuries are not thought to be serious.

Simon Busuttil this evening slammed claims by a German state minister that Malta was the Panama of Europe. “I do not agree with the German Minister [Norbert Walter-Borjans]. If you use your inhaler correctly, you're probably a man

Men and married people are more likely to use an inhaler to treat their respiratory condition properly, a local study has confirmed. The objective of the study – which found that three-quarters of people do not use the device properly – was to determine what predicts the correct use of inhalers. About 15 per cent of the Maltese population suffer from asthma, which is treated mainly through inhaling medicine, by cutting down on smoking and avoiding allergens. Watch: Louis Grech will not seek re-election

Deputy Prime Minister Louis Grech will not be contesting the general election but will remain a consultant if Labour wins another term of office. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said when speaking this evening that this was an emotional moment, and said that Mr Grech, 70, would continue attending Cabinet as "he still has a lot to give".  Speaking at a Labour activity in Iklin, Mr Grech said he felt privileged to have formed part of this administration, describing it as "family". Three Ukrainians arrested at sea by the AFM, accused of people smuggling

Three Ukranian men who were arrested at sea, were taken to court this afternoon and accused of people smuggling. Ilyya Iosifov 28, Valentyn Mykhenvych, 25 and Roman Koloshva, 28 were detained in Maltese territorial waters on the yacht Vino Tinto II in an operation by the Armed Forces of Malta, executing a European Arrest Warrant issued by a Sicilian court just minutes earlier. Malta making steady digital progress

Malta has been making steady progress in its digital economy and now ranks 12th out of the 28 EU member states, moving up one place since 2015. The EU’s mid-term review of the 2015 Digital Single Market strategy highlighted a number of projects being undertaken by the Malta Communications Authority and other stakeholders to improve the ranking. • Malta ranks 9th in terms of connectivity, same as last year. AD complains of being left out of TV debates

Alternattiva Demokratika complained today that the Broadcasting Authority has excluded it from TV debates during the electoral campaign. On the other hand, the PN and PL will have four debates between them and a press conference each. Arnold Cassola, party chairman, said the Broadcasting Authority, with half of the members nominated by the PN and the other half by the PL, was showing that it was there only to accommodate the two bigger parties. €2.5 million revamp of The Victoria Hotel completed

A €2.5 million refurbishment project at The Victoria Hotel in Sliema was completed today. The four-star hotel forms part of the AX Hotels group. Kevin Callus, the hotel's manager, said at a ceremony that extensive works were carried out in the lobby, the Copperfield’s Restaurant, the Penny Black Bar, the guest rooms, gym, indoor pool and conference hall. The Victoria Hotel project was the second major investment by AX Hotels in twoyears, following a €9 million refurbishment at the Seashells Resort at Suncrest. Hoodie-wearing thief holds up Msida greengrocer

A Maltese-speaking man got away with an undisclosed amount of cash after robbing an Msida greengrocer this afternoon.  The man, who was wearing a hoodie and armed with a knife, entered the establishment on Triq L-Isqof FS Caruana at around 5pm.  The thief made a quick getaway before Rapid Intervention Unit officers reached the scene.

BOV introduces card activation security feature

Bank of Valletta has introduced an activation process across its range of credit and debit cards, providing customers with an additional level of security from fraudsters.  The one-time, one-step process is intended to safeguard BOV customers against unauthorised use of their cards, BOV electronic banking executive Ivo Camilleri said.  Cardholders asked to activate their card can do so either by SMS or by calling the bank's customer service centre.  Step-by-step instructions are dispatched with the card itself, a bank spokesperson explained. High trading activity in PG persists

The MSE Share Index extended yesterday’s decline by a further 0.09% to 4,669.149 points. Trading activity was broad as twelve equites were active, seven of which trended lower, four posted gains whilst only Tigne’ Mall closed unchanged. Furthermore, trading volumes surged to a ten-month high of €1.26 million. Cardona to contest the 11th district along with the 8th

Labour deputy leader Chris Cardona has announced he will be a candidate on the 11th district, along with the eighth district (Birkirkara), which he has always contested. In a Facebook post, Dr Cardona said that the Labour leadership had decided he should feature on the 11th district to strengthen the Labour line-up there and send a message of confidence in Dr Muscat in a district which will also be contested by Opposition leader Simon Busuttil. The eleventh district is formed of Mosta, Burmarrad, Attard and Mdina.

Citizenship scheme drives up property prices

Property prices went up by an impressive 8.4 per cent between October and December 2016, thanks to buoyant labour market conditions and growth in disposable income, together with the rise in foreign workers and the Individual Investor Programme - the so-called Citizenship Scheme. The Central Bank of Malta said in its quarterly review that the increase in prices was even steeper than the 5.5 per cent recorded between June and September. For the world's super-rich, the investment of choice is increasingly a very rare naturally pink diamond, an asset class that this year has set records at auction. Managing director of 77 Diamonds, which has a shop in London's Mayfair district and sells online, Tobias Kormind, says the trend for coloured stones has gathered strength as the world emerged from financial crisis. A father and son were today found not guilty of having held a young woman against her will when they allegedly locked the door of their home and removed the key, trapping her inside during a violent argument. Malta's economy to grow faster than first forecast, says Moody's

Credit rating agency Moody's has revised its GDP growth forecast for Malta, the government said in a statement, with the agency now expecting the country's economy to grow at a faster rate than it had originally projected.  The New York-based agency now expects Malta's economy to grow by 4.3 per cent this year, rather than the 3.4 per cent rate it had forecast just last January. A building described as “one of Marsascala’s oldest” has been identified for demolition to make way for a restaurant and overlying residence amid concern from local residents. The solitary building, situated between Triq ix-Xatt and Triq Sant’Anna, appears in old photos of the fishing village. A man who drove his van at speed down a street in Mġarr, hitting his uncle-in-law, had not intended to injure the victim, despite a history of tension between them, a court found today.   Joseph Bugeja, 50, from Mġarr, had pleaded not guilty to having attempted to put the life of Martin Chetcuti in manifest danger and to having driven in a dangerous and negligent manner.
