Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has opened Israel's annual memorial day for the six million Jews systematically killed by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during the Second World War by saying the lessons of the Holocaust guide him daily. The Nazis wiped out a third of the world's Jews and Mr Netanyahu's remarks illustrate how decades later, the Holocaust is still a central part of Israel's psyche. Updated Far-right leader Marine Le Pen and centrist Emmanuel Macron are leading in the official vote count in France's presidential election with about 38-39 per cent of votes counted so far, official figures from the Interior Ministry showed. George Mifsud, who was appointed Broadcasting Authority chairman earlier this month, passed away today. He was 68. Mr Mifsud founded one of Malta's main PR agencies, MPS – Marketing and Communications in 1975. Between 1999 and 2004, he was director on the Gozo Channel board and from 2007 to 2013 he served as plenipotentiary ambassador of Bulgaria. More than 44,000 books are currently missing from Malta’s national libraries, The Sunday Times of Malta has learnt. That is around seven per cent of all the books held in the State-owned collection, a spokeswoman for the libraries told this newspaper. There are some 655,000 books on the shelves, spread across more than 55 libraries. However, although efforts are being made to encourage more to visit the aisles and pick out a book, some are less inclined to return their borrowed titles once they have finished with them. Four people have been injured in a stabbing attack in Tel Aviv by a young Palestinian. The four victims suffered light injuries and the 18-year-old Palestinian was arrested, though it remains unclear whether the attack on Sunday was politically motivated. Palestinians have killed 42 Israelis, two visiting Americans and a British tourist in a wave of stabbings, shootings and car-rammings since September 2015. A standing ovation, no less, greeted Miriam Gauci, twice, at the end of her triumphant performance of Puccini’s ‘Japanese’ masterpiece at Gozo’s Aurora Opera House. The Malta Employers Association has expressed alarm at the "extensive media reports" tarnishing Malta's reputation as a respected EU centre for financial services. Members of the Civil Protection Department quickly put out a fire near a petrol station in tal-Barrani, Zejtun at around 3.15pm, preventing what could have been a major tragedy. No one was injured in the operation.

Argentinian duo Mueran Humanos, known for their experimental, punk and avant-garde methods, will be performing in Malta on Saturday at Razzett l-Aħmar, Attard. A crash involving three Harley-Davidson motorcycles in St Julian's this afternoon left four people hospitalised, with two of them seriously injured. The crash happened at around midday on Triq Mikiel Anton Vassalli, police said. All four crash victims were taken to Mater Dei hospital.  A 36-year-old Żurrieq man and 57-year-old Italian man were grievously injured in the accident. The Egrant saga risks damaging the financial services sector unless it is resolved swiftly, practitioners in the field have cautioned.
