Consumer confidence: dash or crash? – All eyes on ECB

If we could summarise market movement over the past week in one word, jittery would best fit the bill. Amidst investor expectations of further quantitative easing to be announced by the ECB tomorrow, in hand with a continued rally in crude oil prices, equity markets performed strongly, reflecting reignited investor confidence to risk-on sentiment. Weak trade balance data out of China yesterday, however, was enough to force investors to retreat and flee back into safe haven assets such as government bonds. Читать дальше...

Speaking at a press conference, Dr Azzopardi regretted that the police started looking into the case months after it was revealed. Now that the former director of the Property Division had spilled the beans in a sworn declaration, saying he felt pressured and threatened, the police has no option but to prosecute, he said. Roma miss chance to pull off great Champions League upset

AS Roma were left with the uncomfortable feeling last night that they had missed a golden chance to pull off one of the great Champions League upsets against Real Madrid. Roma, trailing 2-0 from the first leg of their round of 16 tie at home, created enough chances at the Bernabeu to have wiped out the deficit before the hour. Instead, forwards Edin Dzeko and Mohamed Salah repeatedly misfired and two quick goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez completed a 4-0 aggregate win for the hosts. Читать дальше...

Wenger brushes off fan banner urging him to quit

Arsene Wenger's running feud with a section of his team's fans showed little sign of abating after Tuesday's FA Cup win over Hull City, with the Arsenal manager saying he had nothing to fear after supporters unveiled a banner urging him to quit. Of women, chattel and our law courts

Yesterday we celebrated Women's Day, a useless pandering to the gods of commerce that's only rivalled by Valentine's Day. Yesterday, in Malta, we also celebrated the fact that a man can pretty much do whatever he feels like to a woman that is considered "his property" and get away with it. Because yes, we may roll our eyes and make tut-tutting noises at "those Muslims and the way they treat women", but man oh man does Maltese law give them a run for their supposed money. Yesterday, a man was found... Читать дальше...
