Panama, Konrad Mizzi, Azerbaijan, trusts…

It sounds like a cross between a geography lesson and a financial services lecture. Throw in a bit of politics and Konrad Mizzi’s Panama affair becomes a big hotchpotch. Kurt Sansone tries to break it down into digestible portions. Did Konrad Mizzi break the law when he opened a trust in New Zealand? No. It is perfectly legal to open a trust and have a financial structure like that set up by the Energy Minister. Various companies in the financial services sector in Malta offer the service to Maltese and foreign clients. Читать дальше...

Kane scores twice to boost Spurs' title hopes

Harry Kane scored his 21st and 22nd goals of the season to inspire Tottenham Hotspur to a routine win at hapless Aston Villa that boosted their Premier League title ambitions. The England striker ended Villa's resistance just before halftime with his 17th goal in his last 20 league appearances and then struck again just after the break, assisted on each occasion by a superb delivery from Dele Alli. The victory for Spurs consigned bottom-placed Villa to a 20th league defeat of the season while Mauricio... Читать дальше...

Roma run continues with Udinese win

Roma kept alive their slim title hopes by extending their Serie A winning streak to eight games with a 2-1 win at Udinese. Edin Dzeko and Alessandro Florenzi scored as Luciano Spalletti's third-place side moved up to 59 points after 29 matches, eight points behind leaders Juventus, who beat Sassuolo 1-0 on Friday, and provisionally two behind second-place Napoli, who visit Palermo later today. Mosta bridge of death may get anti-suicide fence

A structure aimed at preventing suicides is to be erected on Mosta Bridge, a notorious suicide spot, if plans laid out by the local council are approved. “Mosta is fed up of being known for a considerable number of suicides every year, and we want to do our bit to save as many lives as we possibly can,” a source close to the council told this newspaper. The council is in talks with the police and the Infrastructure Ministry about the idea. Questions sent to the police for the latest statistics on suicides in Malta... Читать дальше...

Valletta stay clear at the top

VALLETTA-2, PEMBROKE ATHLETA-0 Two goals in the first half extended Valletta's winning run as the leaders downed Pembroke Athleta. Jhonnattann and Abdelkarim Nafti produced two fine strikes to keep Valletta on course to win the title as they restored their four-point gap on Hibernians with six games remaining. The game was eight minutes old when Valletta came close to opening the scoring. Ryan Camilleri's cross from the right was deflected towards Nafti at the far post and the Tunisian sent in perfect... Hey, parents, chew on this

More than three-quarters of five-year-olds in Malta have already developed serious clinical tooth decay because of poor dental hygiene and sugary diets, new research has found. An ongoing study of Malta’s teeth, parts of which were seen by The Sunday Times of Malta, found that 76 per cent of five-year-olds had already developed enamel decay which required clinical intervention. The decay, also known as caries, is a bacterial breakdown of the surface of the teeth and occurs as a result of acid build-up... Читать дальше...

Pope Francis began his papacy in 2013 by stressing a mercy-over-morals message - one that he is emphasising in particular during his Holy Year of Mercy. Pope Francis told the crowd the Biblical... New book explores every femicide in Malta for the past 215 years

Earlier this week, a trial by jury convicted former policeman Carmel Cutajar of the attempted murder of his estranged wife, Maria, in 2012 and he was jailed for seven-and-a-half years. Although Ms Cutajar’s life was spared, thankfully, there were 131 cases of femicide (the killing of women) between 1800 and the end of 2015, according to crime historian Edward Attard. In the newly published book Il-Femiċidju: Qtil ta’ Nisa f’Malta, (Femicide: The murder of women in Malta) a BDL publication, Mr Attard... Читать дальше...

Late goals seal Hibs' win

HIBERNIANS-3, MOSTA-0 Two goals in the final five minutes eased Hibs' nerves as the champions beat a determined Mosta side 3-0 to maintain their title challenge. Hibs saw more of the ball but struggled to penetrate Mosta who defended well for long stretches. But, as the Blues chased an equaliser in the final stages, Hibs took advantage with goals from Gilmar and Jorginho to make sure of the three points. Hibernians dominated the first half but only had one goal to show for their efforts. It came... Читать дальше...

Church must be one step ahead of the rest of society - Mgr Charles Vella

In the face of adversity, the Church needs to be one step ahead of the rest of society, according to Cana Movement founder Mgr Charles Vella, who believes the Church is too often slow to react. “The Church is one that runs after the fire engines, it hears the sirens and it goes running behind. “That’s not the way I see things. I always wanted to be ahead of things and I think that it is what the Church needs to do today in light of all the things around it,” Mgr Vella said. Breast ban binned

Politicians in New Hampshire have rejected a Bill which would have made it a crime for women to expose their breasts or nipples in public. The Bill - which would have made it a misdemeanour for women to show their breasts with "reckless disregard" for whether it would offend someone - was partly a response to a "Free the Nipple" movement that led to two women being cited for going topless at a beach. Supporters of the Bill had warned that allowing women to go topless at beaches could lead to them... Читать дальше...

Patrijotti cancel protest supposedly due to short burst of rain

The self-styled patriots group Għaqda Patrijotti Maltin called off a planned march through Valletta this morning, supposedly due to a short burst of rain, after fewer than 20 people showed up for the protest. The protest was planned to call for better security measures for the public and the police force after what the group claimed was a spate of attacks by foreigners on Maltese people in Paceville.
