LGBT mural defaced — again — in S.F.’s Mission District
Workers and volunteers from Galeria de la Raza had replaced the artwork titled “Por Vida” or “For Life” on the corner of 24th and Bryant streets Thursday, three days after vandals first scrawled blue and red paint over the work.
The art, created by Manuel Paul of Los Angeles’ Maricon Collective, prompted fierce comments on social media, with some threatening to trash the work before it even went up.
Gallery workers last week pulled down the defaced sheets and re-pasted a fresh digital copy of the work while members of the community and media looked on.
“We would like to send a huge thank you to everyone who has come out to help us re-install the digital mural as well as to those who have sent us messages of support,” the organization posted after the work was fixed.
Galeria de la Raza — which was founded in 1970 and moved two years later to 24th and Bryant streets, where it has pushed social issues through art — said it is in the process of “organizing a community forum to engage the larger community in the coming days.”
