The Coeur d'Alene Press reports a jury on Thursday found 52-year-old Richard Sovenski, of Hayden, not guilty of malicious harassment, but guilty of a misdemeanor charge of battery. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California's population has grown by 215,000 people but is still shy of 40 million. Numbers released Friday show the state's population hit 39.8 million as of July 1, 2018. The population growth was driven by more births than deaths and an addition of 21,000 people to the state through migration. That means more people entered California than left between July 2017 and 2018. The highest growth rates were in inland counties such as Amador, Placer and Merced. An early-morning apartment fire Friday in San Jose killed one person and left more than a dozen people displaced, authorities said. Firefighters responded around 4 a.m. to an apartment complex fire on Blossom Hill Road west of Almaden Expressway, said Capt. Mitch Matlow, a San Jose Fire Department spokesman. The Red Cross is working to assist 15 people displaced by the fire, which includes 12 adults and three children. Matlow confirmed that the person killed was a man in his 30s.
