NAIROBI, Kenya — Six U.S. air strikes that killed more than 60 people in a coastal Somali town were preemptive strikes to prevent a major extremist attack, according to a Somali intelligence officer. The U.S. military said Monday it carried out four strikes on Saturday in which 34 people were killed and two more on Sunday that killed 28. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada's outgoing Republican Attorney General Adam Laxalt and his Democratic successor Aaron Ford said Monday that despite their partisan differences on issues like the Obama health law, most of the office's work is apolitical and the transition between their administrations will be smooth. WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland's president signed legislation Monday that reinstates Supreme Court judges who were forced into early retirement despite the European Union condemning the removals as a violation of democratic standards. Earlier in the day, the EU's top court, the European Court of Justice, ruled that Poland needed to suspend a law that lowered the retirement age for Supreme Court judges and to put about two dozen justices the law had affected back on the bench. GREENWOOD, Mo. (AP) — Police say an infant is recovering after a man walked into a northwest Missouri police station and said he had drowned his 6-month-old child. The Kansas City Star reports the man made the report at the Greenwood police station Monday morning. Greenwood police Cpl. Thomas Calhoun was able to determine where the child was and he and Police Chief Greg Hallgrimson rushed to the pond. They found the child floating in the pond. JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — The great Holland Tunnel wreath controversy has been resolved. After complaints about the placement of two holiday wreaths and a tree decoration over the New York-bound tunnel, more than 21,000 people voted in a poll commissioned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the tunnel's operator. Poll numbers were released Monday. The consensus? Move the tree from over the "N'' in "Holland" to over the "A," and remove a wreath hanging over the "U." ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — The March of Dimes is moving its corporate headquarters from New York to northern Virginia. The nonprofit group, which works to improve mothers' and babies' health, announced Monday it will relocate to the Crystal City section of Arlington County, just across the river from the nation's capital. It is the same neighborhood that Amazon chose last month for a new headquarters campus. Arlington County said it expects the move to bring 80 new jobs and occupy 28,000 square feet of real estate. BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The number of Louisiana public high school students taking college courses is growing, but black students continue to lag behind their white counterparts. Data shows more than 31,000 students took courses through Louisiana's dual enrollment program in the 2017-18 school year, a 60 percent increase over 10 years ago. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Police in North Carolina have filed charges against a man after a 3-month-old was dropped twice as the man was punching and kicking the baby's mother. Raleigh police tell news outlets 27-year-old Jose Luis Cordero-Jimenez is charged with misdemeanor assault on a female and misdemeanor child abuse. He was arrested at his home on the city's north side early Monday and jailed without bond. It's not known if Cordero-Jimenez has an attorney. Anchorage television station KTUU reports Katie Irwin addressed the UAA graduating crowd Sunday. BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A judge is pressing lawyers to complete their work so that a March or April trial can be scheduled for a Vermont man facing murder charges in a wrong-way highway crash that killed five teenagers in 2016. Steven Bourgoin has pleaded not guilty to five counts of second-degree murder for the interstate crash in Williston, Vermont. His lawyer, Robert Katims, has said he would use an insanity defense. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The owners of the Super 8 Motel in Creswell, Oregon, were arrested after investigators determined two fires at their motel were intentionally set. KOIN reports that officials responded to the motel on Nov. 22 shortly before 9:30 p.m. The fire was quickly extinguished. At the time of the fire, six rooms were rented with at least seven people inside. The following Saturday at 1:42 a.m., another fire was reported at the motel. BOSTON (AP) — Gambling revenues have dropped at MGM Springfield in the third month of operation at the Massachusetts' first resort casino. The state Gaming Commission reported Monday the casino near Connecticut generated $21 million in revenues from gambling in November, down from October's $22 million and September's $27 million.
