JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Alaska indigenous leaders are asking a cruise industry giant to stop using heavy fuel oils believed to be harmful to health and the environment. The Juneau Empire reports the leaders traveled to Carnival's corporate headquarters in London last week to deliver the petition, seeking to stop the use of the fuel as an inexpensive alternative. Bristol Bay petitioner Verner Wilson says this fuel takes longer to break down in the marine environment and its emissions produce more environmentally-harmful chemicals than other fuels.

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — A lawsuit has been filed against a Washington state man convicted of killing three people at a house party and against the store where he bought the gun used in the killings. The Daily Herald reports David Bui filed the suit earlier this month against 22-year-old Allen Ivanov, his parents and the Cabela's outfitter store in Marysville, claiming the store and his parents should have known how Ivanov was planning to use the AR-15-style rifle. JAKARTA, Indonesia — A Lion Air flight with 189 people on board crashed into the sea just minutes after taking off from Indonesia’s capital Monday. Indonesia’s disaster agency posted photos online of a crushed smartphone, books, bags and parts of the aircraft fuselage that had been collected by search and rescue vessels that converged on the area. WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) — Police in Rhode Island say a call about an intruder led to an hours-long investigation involving the bomb squad and a hazmat team. Westerly Police Capt. Shawn Lacey says Sunday is the second time in two days that police responded to the caller's address for reports of an intruder — both times finding no one. DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Police in Ohio are still searching for the man who stole a cement mixer from a property in Dublin. Security footage of the Sept. 26 event shows the unidentified man dragging the mixer off the lot until he disappeared from view. WBNS-TV reports the suspect was last seen wearing dark clothing and a ball cap. The cement mixer is valued at $3,500. TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Toledo school officials have announced plans for a new high school aimed at preparing students for medical careers. The district is joining with health care system ProMedica and the University of Toledo to create what school officials are calling The PreMed High School of Toledo. The Blade reports the goal is to locate the school on a hospital campus. Superintendent Romules Durant says the district hopes to open the school by 2020. MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A Montpelier-based food cooperative has announced it is investing $100,000 in a fund that supports Vermont's food producers. The Times Argus reports Hunger Mountain Co-op is investing in the Vermont Community Loan Fund to support its Food, Farms and Forest Fund. The co-op used the loan fund in 1996 to help expand its retail site from 2,000 to 10,000 square feet. DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — The University of New Hampshire is expanding a tuition-free program for qualifying students who transfer to the school from the state's community college system. The program has helped 800 first-year students studying on the Durham and Manchester campuses. It guarantees New Hampshire students who receive federal Pell grants pay no tuition to attend the university. It is now being offered to new graduates of the community college system.
