A former editor for “PBS NewsHour” filed a lawsuit Thursday, saying that he was wrongfully fired due to his gender after he made an “innocuous” remark about Meghan Markle. MONTVILLE, Conn. (AP) — The superintendent of a Connecticut school system who had been charged with failing to report a student "fight club" run by a substitute teacher has resigned. Brian Levesque said in a statement issued with the local Board of Education on Wednesday that the board bought out his contract and he stepped down as superintendent of Montville schools. NEW YORK (AP) — Strong results from major companies including Microsoft, Visa and Comcast are sending U.S. stocks sharply higher Thursday. The rally wiped out most of the market's plunge from the day before, but stocks are still down sharply over the past three weeks. The S&P 500 index rose 2.3 percent as technology and consumer-focused stocks surged. Two visitors to Yosemite Park apparently fell to their deaths from Taft Point, an area known for its spectacular views, officials said Thursday. The bodies of an unidentified man and woman were being recovered by rangers, said Jamie Richards, a park spokeswoman. The cause of the accident is under investigation. Taft Point, at an elevation of 7,500 feet, is a popular day hike destination off Glacier Point Road. ATLANTA (AP) — A federal judge has tweaked her order governing Georgia's handling of absentee ballots and applications that have mismatched signatures. U.S. District Judge Leigh May on Wednesday ordered the state to stop rejecting the ballots and applications because of a signature mismatch without first giving voters a chance to fix the problem. After hearing from groups that had sued and from elections officials, she made changes Thursday to her order affecting the November midterm elections.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah corrections and parole officials have launched investigations about the release of a sex offender who killed a University of Utah student after they briefly dated. Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said Thursday during his monthly televised news conference at KUED-TV that action will be taken if the reviews by the corrections department and board of pardons and parole determine mistakes were made. HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A judge has continued the case of a Connecticut woman charged with stabbing and seriously injuring a police officer. The Hartford Courant reports that a judge on Wednesday continued Chevoughn Augustin's case to Dec. 5. Augustin's lawyer, public defender George Flores, said a psychiatrist has been retained to evaluate Augustin. That work is continuing. Lionsgate announced on Thursday that it has appointed Matt Leonetti as the film studio’s new head of physical production. WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley on Thursday asked for a criminal investigation into whether Julie Swetnick and her attorney, Michael Avenatti, conspired to provide false statements to Congress and obstructed a congressional investigation during the confirmation process for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
