LOS ANGELES (AP) — With the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh in doubt, Justice Elena Kagan discussed how the court worked "super hard" in the past to overcome the unusual scenario of a 4-4 split it is due to encounter next week. Kagan declined to comment on the nomination, but she spoke at length Thursday to law students at the University of California, Los Angeles, about the challenges the court faced the last time it had only eight members and lessons learned from that experience. CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — A Pennsylvania man who led a New Jersey-based staffing company has admitted cheating a commercial finance lending company out of more than $400,000. Federal prosecutors say 47-year-old Jeremy Hare, of Philadelphia, pleaded guilty Friday to wire fraud. He now faces up to 20 years in prison when he's sentenced Jan. 4. Hare was the president and managing member of the firm that entered into a financing agreement with the lender, which provides funding to companies so they can meet payroll and other obligations. GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — A former Mississippi basketball coach is suing over his dismissal claiming age discrimination. The Sun Herald reported Thursday former Long Beach High School coach Joel Boone field a lawsuit against the school district in Gulfport federal court. Boone is in his mid-70s and seeks to be reinstated and receive back pay, damages and attorney's fees. On the upside, you won’t mind when the bad guy kills them. SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City police say witnesses saw a vehicle speed off from a home where a woman who lived there was fatally shot Friday and that a suspect remains at large. Police haven't released the identity of the suspect or provided a description of the vehicle but said the shooting victim was 47-year-old Wanuyung Judd. Detective Keith Horrocks says he didn't know if anyone else was in the home at the time of the shooting but police say they don't believe anyone else in the area of the home is in danger.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire police officer has been injured in the process of trying to arrest a man for an outstanding warrant. Officers arrived at a Manchester apartment after midnight Friday over complaints about loud music. One man, identified as 25-year-old William Farnsworth, fled into the apartment. MANCHESTER, Iowa (AP) — A group of Iowa residents wants a state court to force a roadside zoo to get rid of its animals. The residents filed a lawsuit Thursday in Delaware County against Pam and Tom Sellner, who own Cricket Hollow Animal Park just west of Manchester. OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) — A Milwaukee man is charged in Winnebago County with driving drunk and causing a crash that killed his 10-year-old daughter and injured his son. A criminal complaint says Steven Brownell's blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit to drive when he crashed his Mustang at a high rate of speed along Highway 45 Aug. 10.
