SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A 38-year-old man on probation for a gun crime has been accused of killing a sheriff's deputy and wounding another in a shootout that started with an argument at an auto parts store in the Sacramento area, authorities said Tuesday. SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — A former Vermont teacher accused of secretly taking cellphone photos up a student's skirt is now accused of taking similar photos of female coworkers. The Burlington Free Press reports that 32-year-old Brian Lynam, who taught music at Rice Memorial High School in South Burlington, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to two additional charges of voyeurism. COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — A 115-year-old home in northern Idaho will be moved to a new location and restored as part of a collaboration with the Museum of North Idaho. But Nick Hamm, director of the new film “Driven,” finally found a way to make it work. ATLANTA (AP) — As Georgia's top elections official runs for governor, a federal judge said the state has stalled too long in the face of "a mounting tide of evidence of the inadequacy and security risks" of its voting system. Secretary of State Brian Kemp, a Republican, is in the midst of a closely watched race against Democrat Stacey Abrams, a former state House minority leader who's trying to become the country's first black, female governor. He has repeatedly insisted that Georgia's current voting system is secure.

DETROIT (AP) — Gov. Rick Snyder's administration is being accused of withholding records about abuse allegations at a Detroit home for boys. Michigan Protection and Advocacy Service, known as MPAS, filed a lawsuit Monday against the Department of Health and Human Services. The independent group is empowered under state and federal law to protect the rights of the developmentally disabled. (AP) — Former President Jimmy Carter is campaigning Tuesday in Georgia alongside Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Stacey Abrams, bringing together the state's past and its potential future. WARRENTON, Mo. (AP) — An eastern Missouri woman is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her 85-year-old mother. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 51-year-old Marlene Wynn of Warrenton was charged Tuesday. She is jailed on $500,000 cash-only bond. The name of the woman who was killed has not been released. Warrenton police say officers were called to Wynn's home around 11 a.m. Monday for a reported assault and found a woman dead at the home. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles, one of the world's major fashion centers and long a symbol of glitz and glamour, is taking steps to ban the sale of fur products, a move that would make it the largest city in the U.S. to do so. A proposal to ban the sale of fur products advanced in the City Council on Tuesday. The council voted unanimously to direct the city attorney to draft an ordinance that will prohibit the manufacture and sale of fur products. The ordinance must be presented to the council at a future date for final approval.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — For the second year in a row, Reno sizzled through its hottest summer on record. The National Weather Service says the average daytime high for June, July and August was 93.6 degrees (34.2 Celsius). That's one-third of a degree hotter than the previous record set in 2017. The mercury reached 90 degrees (32 C) on a record 56 consecutive days ending Aug. 25. It topped the century mark 20 times. That also broke the old record of 16 set the year before. The mean average summer temperature averaging the daily highs and lows was 76.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — University of Michigan officials have criticized a professor's decision not to recommend a student for a study program in Israel. The school said in a statement Tuesday it opposes boycotts of Israeli higher education institutions. It adds "injecting personal politics" in decisions related to supporting students "is counter to our values."
