KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Taliban insurgents launched separate attacks on Afghan security forces in the country's north, killing at least 52, provincial officials said Monday. Mohammad Yusouf Ayubi, head of the provincial council in Kunduz province, said that at least 13 security forces were killed and 15 others wounded in an attack on a checkpoint they were manning in Dashti Archi district. PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Gas prices in northern New England are holding fairly steady as summer transitions into fall. GasBuddy's daily survey of 1,228 gas stations in Maine says prices rose 1.3 cents per gallon in the past week to an average of $2.84 on Sunday. Prices in Vermont were down 0.4 cents to $2.87 per gallon while New Hampshire prices were up 0.6 cents to $2.77. ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's army chief has confirmed death sentences for 13 "hardcore terrorists" after military courts found them guilty of carrying out attacks that killed 202 people including 151 civilians. In a statement Monday, the military says Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa also approved prison terms for seven convicts involved in acts of terrorism, including the destruction of educational institutions. NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Newark's Grammy museum will host an exhibit honoring hometown favorite Whitney Houston beginning next month. The exhibit at the Grammy Museum Experience at Newark's Prudential Center arena will feature Houston's childhood Bible and various stage costumes along with scrapbooks, rare photographs and footage from her family's collection. ROGERSVILLE, Mo. (AP) — Authorities have arrested a woman suspected of fatally shooting her boyfriend in southwest Missouri. The Greene County Sheriff's Office says on Facebook that deputies located 45-year-old Melanie Spencer, of Springfield, through the phone she used to call 911 and report that 41-year-old Samuel Biggs was shot. Before Biggs died at a hospital, Spencer was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. The sheriff's office says additional charging information will be submitted to prosecutors. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Polk County sheriff's detective and his girlfriend have been given a year of probation for their roles in an Ankeny bar fracas. Court records say John Negrete and Tereasa Sunberg also were given deferred judgments at their sentencings Friday. That means their convictions can be removed from court records if they complete their probation terms. The two were convicted in July of assault causing injury. John McCain's state campaign manager during the 2000 Republican presidential primary has died during a charity bicycle ride. Organizers of the Closer to Free Ride say Ben Davol died of cardiac arrest during the ride Sunday in New Haven. ST. LOUIS (AP) — A man charged with fatally shooting a St. Louis chef outside a Walmart is a convicted arsonist who was released from prison about nine months earlier. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 38-year-old Jesse Michael Kelley, of Green Park, was charged Saturday with second-degree murder in the death of 29-year-old Alexander Marley. SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — The Syracuse Police Department says 90 officers will soon be outfitted with body cameras thanks to an award from New York state. The department is finishing up its creation of a policy governing use of the cameras and the $30,000 grant will pay for the launch and operation of the program for a year.
