PHOENIX (AP) — Police say a man was shot to death in west Phoenix following an argument and a suspect is in custody. Phoenix police officials say the incident was reported Sunday around 10 p.m. Officers pronounced the victim, a man in his 30s, dead at the scene. They say the victim and suspect were known to each other. The suspect surrendered to officers at the scene. Police have not released identities for either.

FORT EDWARD, N.Y. (AP) — A New York man will be living large thanks to his decision to buy some Slim Jims for his dog. New York Lottery officials say Monday that 73-year-old Dale Farrand recently won the $10 million prize on a Cash Spectacular scratch-off ticket. The Fort Edward man says he bought a $30 ticket at a local Cumberland Farms convenience store while buying Slim Jims snacks for his dog Boots. He scratched the ticket in his car and realized he was a winner. Farrand says he drove straight home and had his wife check the ticket for him.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The number of high-performing public school teachers in New Mexico has increased, according to results from annual evaluations released Monday by the state Public Education Department. More than 34 percent of the state's teachers earned ratings of "highly effective" or "exemplary." That's a 2 percentage point increase from the previous year. Overall, around 75 percent of New Mexico teachers were graded as effective or better when it comes to their success in the classroom — a small jump from the previous year. Читать дальше...

NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) — A school bus driver in northern Delaware has been cited by police after trying to drive through standing flood waters, leaving the bus disabled. Colonial School District officials say the driver tried to drive through flood waters on route 9 near Dobbinsville shortly after 7 a.m. Monday. The bus was carrying 45 William Penn High School students at the time. A tow truck was dispatched and pulled the bus to dry land so the students could walk to another bus, which took them to school. LYNDON, Vt. (AP) — Officials say they have fixed a messenger system at a Vermont school that left parents in the dark when the school was locked down over reports of a gun on campus. WCAX-TV reports Lyndon Institute Head of School Twila Perry says a call will now go to parents in an emergency, telling them how to reach their kids and where to pick them up. DeSantis sent a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan on Monday announcing his immediate resignation. Florence rapidly intensified into a fearsome category 3 hurricane on Monday and could strike a direct and dangerous blow to the Carolinas later this week, possibly as a category 4, forecasters said.
