URBANA, Ill. (AP) — More than 17 times as many University of Illinois students registered to hear a campus speech by former President Barack Obama as there are seats in the auditorium. Obama is scheduled to speak Friday at Foellinger Auditorium in Urbana. The News-Gazette reports 22,611 students registered before a ticket lottery portal closed last Friday for the some 1,300 available seats. NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” and ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” went to work on Labor Day. Ultimately, it was the Disney-owned broadcast net that won the holiday’s primetime. PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island is the seventh-worst in the nation when it comes to the percentage of students who are considered chronically absent. The study by Attendance Works, an organization committed to improving attendance policy, practice and research, defines chronic absenteeism as missing 15 or more days of school annually. WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. (AP) — NASA will test a parachute system off Virginia's coast that is designed to land spacecraft on Mars. Friday's scheduled launch from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia's Eastern Shore will be the third test of the parachute system. The agency said in a press release that the system is designed for spacecraft descending onto the Red Planet from supersonic speeds. LYMAN, Maine (AP) — Police in Maine say two cars collided in Lyman, killing a man and injuring a woman. State police say the crash happened on Monday afternoon in the York County town. They say 29-year-old Alexander Mcinnis of Hollis crossed into the northbound lane and struck a vehicle driven by 46-year-old Rachel Thurston of Lovell. Mcinnis died at the scene and Thurston was transported to Maine Medical Center for injuries that were not life threatening. Police say they are still in the midst of their investigation. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A flight terminal in Kabul, Afghanistan, has been named in honor of an Oklahoma Army National Guard soldier who was killed in action. The National Guard says the "Hughie Terminal" at New Kabul Compound was dedicated Friday and is named for Sgt. Buddy James Hughie of Poteau. Hughie, who was known as "Doc" was a medic and a member of Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 180th Infantry Regiment when he was killed Feb. 19, 2007, in Afghanistan. BENTON, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say three southwest Missouri jailers have been taken to a hospital and a white powdery substance that was found at the jail has tested positive for fentanyl. The Sikeston Standard-Democrat reports that the three jailers were taken to a hospital and later released. Scott County Sheriff Wes Drury says the jail has resumed normal operations after a hazmat crews were called to the facility. The fentanyl was found during the investigation. CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — The Republican and Democratic candidates for Wyoming's U.S. Senate and House seats say they're willing to participate in a debate before the Nov. 6 general election. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — The University of Virginia has approved a funding boost to help pay for a new memorial honoring the contributions of slaves who helped build and maintain the school.
