AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas House has approved scrapping the state's U.S. history exam required to graduate high school and replacing it with a civics test similar to the naturalization exam. Since 2015, more than a dozen states have required high school social studies curriculum to include material covered by the 100 questions people take to become U.S. citizens.

Officer shoots, kills suspect in Market Street stabbing A knife-wielding suspect who was in the act of stabbing a man on Market Street in San Francisco on Wednesday morning was shot and killed by a police officer walking a beat in the area, officials and witnesses said. SEATTLE (AP) — A couple charged in connection with a shooting during a protest of the appearance of a right-wing speaker at the University of Washington has pleaded not guilty. In charging papers, King County prosecutors say "this shooting was not an impulsive act done in a moment of fear."

Democrats also backed the measure, which protects popular domestic programs such as education, medical research and grants to state and local governments from cuts sought by Trump — while dropping from earlier version a host of GOP agenda items. NEW YORK (AP) — The acquittal of a suburban foster father charged with sexually abusing boys in his care shows the challenges prosecutors face in proving abuse allegations without strong corroborating evidence. Gail Goodman, a psychology professor at the University of California at Davis whose research has focused on child abuse and the accuracy of witness memory, said it's striking the jury foreman favored acquittal from the start. The government’s Statistics Canada agency said Wednesday new census figures show there are now 5.9 million Canadians aged 65 and older. The agency said that despite the recent acceleration in aging, Canada has a lower proportion of seniors — 16.9 percent — than any other Group of Seven country except the U.S, which is at 14.5 percent. Doug Norris, chief demographer at the analytical services company Environics Analytics, said an older population will be a drag on economic growth as seniors spend less than most.

SEATTLE (AP) — A man jailed on drug charges has accused Seattle Mayor Ed Murray of paying him for sex when the man was a teenager decades ago, claims that were vehemently denied Wednesday by a spokesman for the mayor. Court records show he was initially charged with cocaine possession and released from jail but re-booked in March and jailed again. Murray has also denied the claims by Heckard and two other men who separately told The Seattle Times they met Murray while living in a center for troubled teens and that he paid them for sex.
