(AP) — Massachusetts education officials are getting an update on the state's worst-performing school districts. The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education is scheduled to hear progress reports Monday at Malden headquarters from the receivers of the Lawrence, Holyoke and Southbridge school districts, which are all considered Level 5 chronically underperforming districts.

The Fresno Bee reports teen-ager Neng Thao drowned Saturday in the San Joaquin River in Fresno, as family members looked on. DENVER (AP) — A mother of two children who sought sanctuary at a Quaker meeting house in Denver to avoid U.S. immigration authorities has been granted a temporary stay from deportation. Ingrid Encalada Latorre, a 33-year-old native of Peru, and her attorney announced Saturday that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials agreed not to pursue deportation through Aug. 7. Latorre is seeking to withdraw the plea, contending she received deficient legal counsel.

(AP) — A humpback whale that made a big splash with boaters after wandering into a Southern California harbor was on the move again Sunday after finding its way back to the open ocean. Authorities may have helped it on its way by playing a continuous loop of humpback whale feeding sounds overnight near the harbor's entrance-exit point. Whale experts told Higgins it appeared to be a healthy juvenile, although he didn't know its age.

Media outlets report Judy Sheindlin gave the keynote address Saturday at the commencement for South Charleston High School graduates at the Charleston Civic Center.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A juvenile is facing charges after a social media post threatened a school's graduation in Montgomery. Police in Montgomery confirmed the threats Sunday. Sgt.
