Republican Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has signed legislation allowing the state's three public universities to borrow up to $1 billion to build new research facilities and tackle a maintenance backlog. Two bills extending workers' compensation coverage to current or retired firefighters with some cancers or heart problems also await action. Others would boost mileage payments for state lawmakers and require counties and cities to only set votes for sales tax increases during November general elections.

Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos signed ceremonial maps Monday to acquire the 296-acre Marion River Carry property that settles a land ownership dispute in an area known as Township 40 near Raquette Lake. Stakeholders finally agreed the state would give up its claims if the private owners paid money the state could use to buy land elsewhere. The agreement required votes from two successive state legislatures and one from New York voters because it involved adjustments to the state constitution.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Trump administration announced Monday that it will fully fund a $650 million federal grant for electrification of a San Francisco Bay Area train system that also would help California's high-speed rail project. Future bullet trains would need electrified rails and high-speed rail's business plan calls for the two systems to share lines along the Peninsula Corridor in the Bay Area.

(AP) — A small private college suspended 13 students over a hazing incident that officials said included extreme drinking as part of an initiation into a secret social club, and police are investigating a reported sexual assault that followed the incident. Carleton College said it suspended the students for three trimesters, or one academic year, for violating the school's code of conduct. Hundreds of law enforcement personnel to honor fallen deputy (AP) — Hundreds of law enforcement officers from Montana and surrounding states are expected to attend a memorial service for a sheriff's deputy who was killed in the line of duty.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A northern Indiana prosecutor plans to retry a man in a triple-slaying case now that the U.S. Supreme Court has opted not to hear the state's appeal of a ruling that threw out his second conviction and death sentence. The high court on Monday left in place a federal appeals court ruling that said jurors should have heard evidence that one of the victims was seen alive after the time prosecutors allege Kubsch committed the killings.

Matt Levinson, chairman of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission made the comment after the state Division of Gaming Enforcement released figures showing gross operating profit for the seven casinos rose by 30.4 percent in the first quarter of 2017 compared with the same period a year ago. "If there were any doubt about the health of Atlantic City's casino industry, these results should lay them to rest," Levinson said.
