(AP) — Purdue University says it has received a record number of admissions applications for the fall semester for the sixth year in row. The university said in a news release that as of Monday, applications have been submitted by 47,475 prospective first-year students.

Republican Gov. Chris Christie's administration announced in December it would stop seeking a waiver for "able-bodied" adults without dependents for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, once called food stamps. Since 2009, New Jersey was able to waive a requirement that food-stamp recipients work at least 20 hours a week because of the struggling economy.

School district superintendent announces salary, job cuts (AP) — The Hattiesburg Public School District interim superintendent has informed district employees of more pending salary and job cuts.

The state's voucher program subsidizes private school tuition. According to state fiscal analysts, 142 districts that lost $16.1 million in aid this school year raised their taxes to generate $21.4 million.
