Google has evaluated more than 1.2 million websites for potential removal from its search engine since a court in Europe ruled last year that European Union citizens have the right to delete personal information from the Internet. The EU ruling gives Europeans a mechanism to ask search engines to hide links to pages that contain information they consider damaging and whose continued publication doesn’t serve the public interest. Since coming into force, the ruling has caused concern among both technology and media companies.

The notice from the California Air Resources Board came less than a week after state and federal regulators disclosed that Volkswagen Group automakers installed software to cheat emissions tests on more diesels than initially thought.
