SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google is about to embark on an old-school search, swapping its Internet algorithm for a custom-built van that will cruise across the U.S. to find out how people use its online services and react to new features. The Disney-owned company launched a national contest Friday that invites girls in grades 10 through 12 to create science or technology projects that "could make the world a better place." Civil War — Girls Reforming the Future Challenge to encourage girls to develop and embrace STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) skills. Studies show girls are just as interested in STEM subjects as boys but are vastly underrepresented in science and tech careers.

A new private-public project, dubbed gondolas4all, on Friday unveiled the first access point for wheelchair users to board one of Venice's storied black-lacquered gondolas. Gondolier Alessandro Dalla Pieta said that over 20 years he had seen people in wheelchairs dozens of times looking at us as if we were the last Coca Cola in the desert.

The actor and comedian is guest curator of an exhibition at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts devoted to Canadian modernist Lawren Harris. JERUSALEM (AP) — A 112-year-old Israeli who lived through both World Wars and survived the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz is the world's oldest man, Guinness World Records announced on Friday. Marco Frigatti, Head of Records for Guinness awarded Kristal a certificate at his home in Haifa on Friday. NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are moving sharply higher on Friday following a rally in Europe and an upturn in crude oil prices. All 10 industry sectors of the Standard and Poor's 500 index rose, led by energy company shares. U.S. crude added 68 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $38.52 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange after the International Energy Agency said "there are signs that prices might have bottomed out." JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A South African teenager vacationing in Mozambique may have found part of a wing from missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which his family dismissed as "rubbish" and his mother nearly threw away, he said Friday. On Dec. 30, Liam Lotter was strolling on a beach in southern Mozambique, near the resort town of Xai Xai, when he spotted a gray piece of debris washed up on the sand, he recalled. NEW YORK (AP) — A Bulgarian man has been charged with manipulating the stocks of Avon and two other companies by issuing fake takeover offers. Nedko Nedev faces an eight-count indictment, with charges for crimes related to market manipulation, insider trading and aggravated identity theft. Nedev and others who weren't identified are also accused of a similar scheme with shares of reinsurance company Tower Group International in May 2014 and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in December 2012.
