Stocks ended mostly lower after a volatile day as traders tried to figure out what was next for U.S. interest rates. The bumpy trading came after the Federal Reserve decided to keep interest rates low for now, citing weakness in the global economy and unsettled financial markets. The Nasdaq composite rose 4.71 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,893.95.

PETERSVILLE, Alaska (AP) — An Alaska State Trooper helicopter crew Wednesday spotted a hunter missing since Saturday outside Petersville in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The Alaska Incident Management Team, MATSAR, Alaska Mountain Rescue Group, Alaska Search and Rescue Dogs, Petersville SAR Group, the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center and the Alaska National Guard helped with the search.

NEW YORK (AP) — Wal-Mart says it will hire 60,000 employees to meet increased shopping demand over the holiday season. Wal-Mart also said it would give employees more control over their schedules, improve training and give employees more opportunities for advancement.

The announcement follows July's crash in Long Island, New York's wine country, when a pickup truck smashed into a limousine carrying eight friends, killing four women. NTSB spokesman Eric Weiss says the federal agency will investigate limousine crashes on a case-by-case basis.

(AP) — Jardiance sharply reduced chances of dying in diabetic patients at high risk of heart complications, a study shows, making the medication the first shown to lengthen diabetics' lives. The daily pill for Type 2 diabetes reduced deaths from heart complications by 38 percent, deaths from any cause by 32 percent and hospitalizations due to chronic heart failure by 35 percent, according to the study by Jardiance makers Eli Lilly and Boehringer Ingelheim.

The world's biggest online social network said Thursday that advertisers can now buy ads that will be seen — from top to bottom — on a user's screen. Facebook also formed a partnership with analytics company Moat to measure the effectiveness of video ads, including how many people watch them and for how long.

NEW YORK (AP) — General Motors agreed to pay $900 million and submit to a monitor in a deal with the government in which it admits that a deadly problem with small-car ignition switches was hidden from the public for over a decade, authorities announced Thursday. WASHINGTON (AP) — For the second straight week, average long-term U.S. mortgage rates inched up this week as financial markets awaited the Federal Reserve's crucial decision on interest rates. Mortgage giant Freddie Mac said Thursday the average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage edged up to 3.91 percent from 3.90 percent a week earlier. Capping months of feverish speculation, Fed policymakers may finally raise a key interest rate on Thursday.

Coroner: 5 dead in small plane crash in rural Georgia woods (AP) — Five people aboard a single-engine plane died when the aircraft crashed in rural southeast Georgia, scattering debris across a wooded area a few miles from the local airport, authorities said Thursday. The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane, a single-engine RV-10, crashed Wednesday about 4 miles east of the small Bacon County Airport.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — A Lynchburg woman faces charges of bringing a loaded gun to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The Transportation Security Administration says a TSA officer staffing a checkpoint X-ray machine detected the handgun on Wednesday. The TSA said Thursday that the gun was loaded with seven rounds, along with one round in the chamber. Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police cited the woman on a weapons charge and confiscated the gun. The TSA says in a news release that the airport's operations weren't affected.

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors will pay $575 million to settle hundreds of civil lawsuits filed against the company over faulty small-car ignition switches, including the bulk of pending wrongful death and injury cases. With the settlements, GM is taking big steps toward moving past the ignition switch scandal, which tarnished the company's reputation but touched off a series of safety companywide safety reforms.
