Armenia condemns nuclear test in North Korea
Armenia has condemned a nuclear test North Korea carried out today.
“We express deep concern over the nuclear test carried out by North Korea on September 9, which poses a threat to stability and peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Asia-Pacific,” Spokesman for the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Tigran Balayan said in a statement.
“Such actions hinder the international efforts targeted at the peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula,” Balayan added.
North Korea conducted its fifth and biggest nuclear test on Friday and said it had mastered the ability to mount a warhead on a ballistic missile, drawing condemnation from the United States as well as China, Pyongyang's main ally.
The UN Security Council will meet later to discuss North Korea's fifth and most powerful nuclear test to date. The 15 council members will meet this evening for urgent consultations, at the request of the United States and Japan.
"This is in clear violation of numerous UN Security Council resolutions and in complete disregard of the repeated demands of the international community," Yukiya Amano, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said in a statement. -0-
