Covidiot and Zoombombing included in expanded list for Oxford Word of the Year
Oxford Dictionary said that there were too many words to sum up the seismic events of 2020.
Oxford Dictionary has expanded its Word of the Year to an entire list following an ‘unprecedented 12 months’.
From covidiot and superspreader to moonshot, the words have been chosen to reflect the ‘ethos, mood, or preoccupations’ of 2020.
The dictionary said that there were too many words to sum up the seismic events of this year – from the coronavirus crisis to the global protests against racism and police brutality.
The list includes words reflecting key social events, as well as new words borne out of the pandemic and the growing use of technology as people had to adapt to working from home.

Covid-19, WFH, lockdown, circuit-breaker, support bubbles, keyworkers, furlough and Black Lives Matter are among the Words of 2020.
Zoombombing – the practice of infiltrating video conference calls – also made the list, along with unmute and blursday – a day of the week that is indistinguishable from any other.
Casper Grathwohl, the president of Oxford English Dictionaries (OED) said: ‘I’ve never witnessed a year in language like the one we’ve just had. The Oxford team was identifying hundreds of significant new words and usages as the year unfolded, dozens of which would have been a slam dunk for Word of the Year at any other time.
‘It’s both unprecedented and a little ironic – in a year that left us speechless, 2020 has been filled with new words unlike any other.’
Last year Climate Emergency was deemed Word of the Year. Previous examples include vape, selfie, post-truth and Brexit.
This year new phrases coined as a result of the pandemic, known as neologisms, made the list, such as mask up, anti-mask, anti-masker and mask-shaming.
The list also included existing words that came back into use due to events in the news, such as conspiracy theory and mail-in voting.
The OED said one of the most remarkable developments has been the extent to which scientific terms have entered everyday discourse, with most of us now familiar with the term ‘R number’.
Meanwhile coronavirus, a term that dates back to the 1960s when it was mainly only used by scientists, became one of the most frequently used nouns in the English language by March, though it was later overtaken by Covid-19.
Use of the word pandemic also increased by 57,000%.
