HAWTHORNE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a Florida man driving a dump truck was killed when he backed into the path of a train. The Gainesville Sun reports that the crash occurred Wednesday morning in Hawthorne. The Florida Highway Patrol reports that 59-year-old Terry Owens was pulling out of a private driveway that intersects a set of railroad tracks when the CSX train hit the truck's left side. HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — A Huntsville woman is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to stealing more than $100,000. WAAY-TV reports 42-year-old Joan Marie Chandler pleaded guilty to one count of theft of government funds by filing fraudulent tax returns. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Alabama says Chandler illegally received $107,707 from a total of 10 refund transfers from February 2015 to April 2015. (AP) — A federal judge says a Delaware inmate charged in a deadly prison riot this year is entitled to a court-appointed lawyer in an earlier lawsuit accusing prison workers of using excessive force against him several years ago. Wednesday's order came after Pedro Chairez told the judge that he himself was a hostage during February's revolt, and that he lost the legal materials related to his civil suit when inmates' property was destroyed after the riot.
