Kurtenbach: Steph’s injured, Kyrie is a Maverick, but the Warriors should remain calm at the NBA trade deadline

The Dubs' NBA trade deadline plan should not change after a disastrous weekend.

Steph Curry is out for who knows how long — weeks, most likely — and now the team that played the Warriors in last year’s Western Conference finals has a new superstar.

It was a big weekend for the Warriors for all the wrong reasons.

And with the trade deadline approaching later this week, the one-two punch of Curry’s leg injury and Kyrie Irving’s trade to the Dallas Mavericks is enough to create some consternation.

But the Warriors’ best play is to stick to the plan they had before this weekend.

And that plan is to do very little — if anything.

The Warriors’ brass believed this team had the pieces to contend for a title before Saturday night, when Curry sprained a ligament in his left leg. You can disagree, but you can’t argue with the logic that, in the Warriors’ eyes, those pieces should still be considered good enough to tread water in the Western Conference while Curry is sidelined.

Unless another team overvalues James Wiseman (if you know of anyone willing to do this, please write to 1 Warriors Way, San Francisco, CA 94158, c/o Bob Myers), or the Dubs can land an obvious win for a bench player (like my favorite target, Utah’s Jarred Vanderbilt), the Warriors will stand pat with their roster come Thursday.

And despite what strangers on the internet will tell you, there is no trade for the Warriors to make that will mitigate the absence of Curry.

Sorry, but Mike Conley, Kyle Kuzma, Pascal Siakam, and Kevin Durant aren’t coming to town this week.

How could they? The Warriors can’t — and wouldn’t — trade Jordan Poole or Andrew Wiggins after they signed new contracts in October. Jonathan Kuminga is too good to shop.

The team also can’t move a first-round draft pick until the second half of the decade.

A combination of the Warriors’ (tradable) young players and the rights to draft a current seventh-grader would be an embarrassingly weak offer for any of those All-Stars (I expect Kuzma to be added to the team in the coming days).

Not that the Warriors would — or should — make such a move if they had the appropriate assets.

The Warriors’ biggest advantage in the market last week was that they were not desperate. Let other teams freak out, the Warriors thought. We’ll stay the course.

The Curry injury obviously changes the team’s circumstances, but there’s no reason for the Dubs to freak out.

Remember the last time they did that?

After Klay Thompson tore his Achilles tendon, the Warriors traded a first-round pick for Kelly Oubre — a player who did his best to undercut the team every time he was on the floor.

There will always be players like Oubre who are available, with their teams shopping them praying that someone desperate comes calling. Oubre himself is available at this year’s deadline.

No, the Warriors have to learn the lesson of 2020-21: take their medicine and don’t abandon the truth of a week ago. The foundations of this team are strong, even if its performance hasn’t been.

What the Warriors should do is look into the buyout market. There might be a big man on the cheap there. But that market won’t develop until after the trade deadline.

As for Irving and the Mavericks — who cares?

Yes, Irving is a stellar player, but now the Mavericks have two ball-dominant point guards who don’t play any defense. It’s shades of the Chris Paul-James Harden Rockets, albeit without the top-flight role players around them.

Plus, what’s to say Irving won’t disappear into the mountains and stay for a month when the Mavericks next play in Denver?

World B. Flat long ago relinquished the right to be taken seriously. His basketball might be the last respectable thing about Irving, but those tight handles and that silky jumper joining the Western Conference shouldn’t change how the Warriors view themselves.

For the Dubs, the next few weeks are about surviving.

It might not be pretty. It’s certainly going to bring about some anxiety. But if this team can make it through the trade deadline without doing anything rash, they’ll have done well.
