Update On Anthony Rizzo’s Back Is Not Great…
The Cubs are 10 days away from their first game of the regular season and for the past week or so Anthony Rizzo hasn’t been fully participating in summer camp. The first baseman has been dealing with a tight back, which is certainly nothing new, but the latest update on the minor injury is kind of worrying.
Rizzo took some live batting practice on Sunday and his back acted up again. He won’t be playing in tonight’s intrasquad scrimmage that will be on the Marquee Sports Network. Manager David Ross even brought up possible tests needed for Rizzo.
It’s not like we’re talking about Rizzo being done or even that he’ll miss time to begin the regular season yet, but of course the Cubs and fans would prefer if he was as close to 100% once Opening Day arrives.
The Cubs will play three exhibition games beginning Sunday before their first game of the year against the Brewers on July 24, at Wrigley Field. If Rizzo’s back doesn’t get better by next Friday the Cubs do have solid options behind him, as Victor Caratini or Kris Bryant could slide over to first base if needed.
Let’s just hope it doesn’t get to that point.
