After addressing their needs on the defensive line with the blockbuster acquisition of Jadeveon Clowney, the Seattle Seahawks look to contend in the NFC West as they open the 2019 season against the Cincinnati Bengals and their new head coach Zac Taylor. The Bengals finished at the bottom of the AFC North last season with a 6-10 record.

The three-time Pro Bowler and No. 1 overall draft pick in 2014 out of South Carolina was shipped to the Seahawks for a 2020 third round pick. While Clowney has never registered more than 9.5 sacks in the NFL, he’ll now be playing in a 4-3 system, which Clowney excelled in collegiately.
The offense is again in the capable hands of Russell Wilson, who at the time became the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL after signing a 4-year, $140 million deal in April that included a $65 million signing bonus. Wilson threw for 3,448 yards and 35 touchdowns with only seven interceptions in leading the Seahawks to the playoffs for the sixth time in his seven seasons.
Wilson’s new primary target will be Tyler Lockett after Doug Baldwin retired. Lockett set career highs across the board with 57 catches, 965 yards, and 10 TDs in 2018. Second-round pick DK. Metcalf is expected to slot into the No. 2 role.
For the first time since 2003, Marvin Lewis is no longer at the helm for the Bengals. Instead, it’s 36-year-old Taylor taking the reins after two years with the Los Angeles Rams on Sean McVay’s staff as a wide receivers coach and quarterbacks coach last year. Veteran Andy Dalton is seeking a bounce-back 2019 after missing the final five games last season with a fractured thumb.
Wide receiver A.J. Green is not expected to play in this game as he continues to deal with a foot injury. Slot receiver Tyler Boyd, who topped 1,000 yards in his first full season as a starter, will try to make up for Green’s absence, along with the tight end C.J. Uzomah and Tyler Eifert. Green’s absence also puts more pressure on running back, including Joe Mixon, who had a breakout second season in which he totaled 1,168 rushing yards.
