Prosecutors have charged a man with killing a Catholic bishop in a crime that stunned Los Angeles religious and immigrant communities. Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell, 69, was fatally shot Saturday in the bedroom of his home in Hacienda Heights, an unincorporated community about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Suspect Carlos Medina is the husband of O’Connell’s housekeeper. Medina had done work at the bishop’s home and was arrested Monday by a SWAT team. Medina is charged with one count of murder. Draft U.S. rules would allow soy, oat, almond and other drinks that bill themselves as “milk” to keep using the name. The Food and Drug Administration says plant-based beverages don't pretend to be from dairy animals and U.S. consumers aren't confused by the difference. Dairy producers have called for the FDA to crack down on the use of the term milk. Former Virgin Galactic CEO George Whitesides says he is seeking the U.S. House seat held by Republican Rep. Mike Garcia in a district north of Los Angeles. Whitesides says Congress isn't doing enough to help people in the the 27th District and that Garcia is part of the problem. Whitesides is a Democrat who served as NASA chief of staff during former President Barack Obama's administration. A Los Angeles judge has sentenced the man convicted of gunning down rapper Nipsey Hussle to 60 years to life in prison. The sentence was handed down Wednesday to 33-year-old Eric R. Holder Jr. A jury in July found Eric R. Holder Jr. guilty of first-degree murder of the 33-year-old Hussle. He was also convicted of two counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter. Judge H. The Biden administration said Wednesday it is considering the first-ever lease sale for offshore wind energy in the Gulf of Mexico, a key part of a push to deploy 30 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030 to help fight climate change. Novak Djokovic says he has asked American authorities for special permission to enter the United States to play tennis tournaments in California and Florida despite being unvaccinated against the coronavirus. Automaker Stellantis says earnings grew in 2022 from a year earlier and its push into electric vehicles led to a jump in sales even as it faces growing competition from the industrywide shift. A man with alleged ties to a California prison gang has pleaded not guilty to killing six people, including a teenage mother and her baby, last month at a central California home connected to a rival gang. Investigators probing a fatal 2021 Amtrak train derailment in Montana say the track had been bent along a curve near the accident site and the problem had been getting worse as freight trains traveled over it before the derailment. Authorities say a maintenance worker was killed in explosion at an Ohio metals plant that sparked a large fire and sent more than a dozen people to hospitals, with at least two in critical condition. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office says 46-year-old Steven Mullins, of North Ridgeville, died from injuries suffered in Monday's blast at the I.
