De Rossi hospitalised with COVID-19 after outbreak in Italy squad

Former World Cup winner Daniele De Rossi, now a member of Italy’s coaching staff, has been hospitalised in Rome with Covid-19, according to multiple media reports on Friday. The 37-year-old former Roma captain was one of four members of Italy’s staff who were infected during recent 2022 World Cup qualifiers, in an outbreak which has also hit eight players. DMX, the hardcore hip-hop star whose ominous, snarling raps chronicled the violence and struggles on American streets, has died. He was 50 years old. The rapper's longtime lawyer confirmed DMX's death to AFP, after a statement from his family widely shared on social media said the artist, born Earl Simmons, died after nearly a week on life support following a heart attack. Azzopardi claims Abela was promised €300,000 from HSBC heist loot

Updated 8.30pm with Abela's denial PN MP Jason Azzopardi is claiming that Minister Carmelo Abela allegedly aided the mastermind behind the attempted HSBC bank heist for a €300,000 payment from the loot. The accusation comes days after Abela denied any involvement in the 2010 heist that ended in a violent shoot-out, describing any links to him as "stories, fairytales and inventions". Minister looking into claims woman died of blood clot weeks after jab

Health Minister Chris Fearne has asked Mater Dei's chief medical officer to look into claims that a "healthy" woman died three weeks after she was given the AstraZenica vaccine. The victim's husband said his 67-year-old wife died of a blood clot three weeks after getting the AstraZenica vaccine. He also claimed she was perfectly healthy before her death, according to an online report in the digital platform SideStreet. Man who held women at knifepoint jailed over spate of thefts

A man who admitted to robbing a woman at knifepoint earlier this month was jailed for four years upon his arraignment on Friday over several theft-related charges. Joseph Brincat, a 34-year old Senglea resident, was escorted to court facing charges which allegedly linked him to a series of thefts, the last being a botched attempt to rob a woman at knifepoint on April 2. Tourists booking a holiday to Malta could receive up to €200 each

Updated 6pm with MHRA statement Tourists booking summer holidays to Malta directly through local hotels will receive a financial handout, Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo said on Friday.   Addressing a press conference, Bartolo said the Malta Tourism Authority had been allocated €3.5million for the scheme that will impact some 35,000 tourists travelling to the island from June.  Tourists booking accommodation at a five-star hotel directly through the hotel’s booking system will receive a €100 handout from the Malta Tourism Authority. Norway PM holds birthday dinner, fined €2,000 for violating virus restrictions

Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg received a hefty fine on Friday for breaking the country’s virus curbs by organising a family birthday dinner that she ended up not attending, police said. Police concluded that the dinner organised in part by Solberg had exceeded the number of guests allowed at private functions. For the infraction, the head of government was fined 20,000 Norwegian kroner (about €2,000). “Even if the law is equal for everyone, everyone is not equal,” Commissioner Ole Saeverud told a press conference. Prime Minister Robert Abela led tributes to Britain's Prince Philip, saying the people of Malta will always treasure his memory.  The Duke of Edinburgh died on Friday morning at Windsor Castle, at the age of 99. A veteran Greek crime journalist was shot dead outside his home in Athens on Friday, a police source said, in a rare crime targeting a member of the media. Giorgos Karaivaz, who worked for private TV station Star and also ran news blog bloko.gr, was shot several times, the police source told AFP. Reports said the journalist had been shot by two men on a motorbike. Man lands eight-year jail term over spate of thefts

A man who returned to criminal behaviour months after serving time behind bars landed an eight-year jail term after admitting to a string of thefts. Frankie Pace, a 41-year old Senglea resident, was escorted to court on Friday over charges related to eight thefts and three failed attempts, including two muggings earlier this month. A Paola residence was first targeted on February 9, with other robberies taking place throughout March. France on Friday said under 55s who received a first injection of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine should be given a second jab from a different producer, but the WHO warned there was not sufficient data to recommend the practice. Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip has died, Buckingham Palace said on Friday. The Duke of Edinburgh, as he is formally known, was 99. Egyptologists uncover 'lost golden city' buried under the sands

Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of an ancient city in the desert outside Luxor that they say is the "largest" ever found in Egypt and dates back to a golden age of the pharaohs 3,000 years ago. Famed Egyptologist Zahi Hawass announced the discovery of the "lost golden city", saying the site was uncovered near Luxor, home of the legendary Valley of the Kings. 48 new COVID-19 cases recorded

Malta has recorded 48 new COVID-19 cases, continuing a trend of double-digit infections. No new deaths were recorded. There are now 549 active cases as 53 patients recovered overnight.  Friday's new cases were found from 2,036 swab tests taken over the previous 24 hours.
