The Planning Authority has instructed the owners of a restaurant in Naxxar, which residents complain is occupying public space, to abide by their permit conditions, the Times of Malta was told. The European Commission proposed on Monday opening formal talks with the United States to address US concerns that its farmers do not get a fair share of the Europe's beef market. Two men were remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to a number of car thefts which took place in August. Mario Farrugia, 48, of St Venera and Clint Cauchi, 33, of Siġġiewi, were jointly charged with the theft of an Isuzu vehicle in Birkirkara on August 28. The former was separately charged with the theft of three other vehicles, a Toyota Vitz, a Toyota Liteace and a Mazda Demio from Birkirkara and Paola. A massive fire raced through Brazil's 200-year-old National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, probably destroying its collection of more than 20 million items, ranging from archeological finds to historical memorabilia. Online hate speech was growing at an alarming rate, police investigators said. “It is worrying. We are seeing an increase in reports of hate speech on social media and other websites. Ten people including children were shot at an apartment complex in San Bernardino, California on Sunday night, police said, with three people in dire condition. "We got a call about 10:45 p.m. for shots fired," said San Bernardino spokesman Capt. Richard Lawhead. "We found 10 victims down at the scene. Three are extremely critical." A 256-year-old bronze bell pealed once again at Dingli parish church on Monday after almost ending up in the scrap heap. The Democratic Party has criticised Opposition leader Adrian Delia for continuing to refuse to nominate an Opposition representative to the Waste Management Committee. It recalled that a year ago it had proposed its own MP, Godfrey Farrugia, to the position but the nomination was turned down. (It was turned down by the government, which said it was up to the leader of the opposition to make the nomination.) Updated Monday 10.09am - Two brothers were granted bail on Monday morning after pleading not guilty to having imported fireworks material and illegally operated a fireworks factory in an unsafe manner in a field in Gudja over the past months and years. Peter and Andrea Theuma, aged 69 and 67 respectively, were arrested on Saturday after a tipoff to the police.
