There are just 27 student nurses in mental health, which, Mental Health Commissioner John Cachia warns, is inadequate to address staff shortage issues. Figures supplied to the Times of Malta by the University of Malta show that 27 students are reading for a bachelor’s degree in mental health nursing. Six more are reading for a master’s in mental health nursing and six for a general nursing master’s with a specific focus on mental health. The teachers’ union has refused all offers made by Malta Council for Arts Science and Technology (Mcast) and was insisting on proceeding down a dead end of strikes and industrial actions, the college said on Thursday. Mcast said in a statement that in the past two days it had proposed a further improved salary package and working conditions. Updated 6.40pm Archbishop Charles Scicluna is recovering well after he had his gallbladder removed at a hospital in Santiago, Chile on Wednesday morning, the Curia said. He is now in good condition and recovering well from laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a minimally invasive procedure with a very good prognosis. It is expected that the recovery time at the hospital will take between 48 and 72 hours. Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna has been admitted to San Carlos de Apoquindo Hospital, in Santiago, Chile, and is undergoing gallbladder surgery, the Curia announced on Wednesday afternoon. Britain wants to discuss with the European Union the length of any post-Brexit transition period, saying its government agrees it should be around two years but must be long enough to prepare "new processes" and "new systems".
