The roads in Mdina and Mellieħa will once again see a flurry of activity as the Malta Classics event returns from October 5-8. The event is expected to attract over 70 pre-1976 cars taking part in hill climb, static shows and motorsport events. Malta Classics 2017 will be split into three events – the Mellieħa Hill Climb, the Mdina Concours d’Elegance and the Mdina Grand Prix. Chancellor Angela Merkel today said Germany should react decisively to Ankara's detention of two further German citizens, amid growing calls for Berlin to issue a formal travel warning for Germans heading to Turkey. Parents who put babies to sleep in their own rooms report the infants get more rest and have more consistent bedtime routines than parents who share a room or a bed with their babies, a recent study suggests. The study focused on infants 6 to 12 months old. Researchers examined data from a questionnaire completed by parents of 6,236 infants in the US and 3,798 babies in an international sample from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Great Britain and New Zealand. The nurses’ union is threatening to order members not to leave the ambulance when faced with threatening situations unless the police were present. Earlier this week, the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses called on the Home Affairs Ministry to better protect nurses responding to emergency calls outside hospitals and health centres. Neither the government nor the police would give details on the irregularities allegedly committed by three senior Gozo Ministry employees suspended more than a month ago. Most of the babies born in Malta in 2015 were delivered in December when 401 births were registered. Figures issued this week by the Eurostat, the EU statistics agency, show that, in the year under review, February was the least popular month with 311 births being registered. A total of 4,325 babies were born in 2015, up 134 when compared to the previous year. In both years, more babies were born during the colder months than in the summer. Property owners can now apply to have their premises added to the stock of subsidised housing offered by the government. The government intends to rent these houses itself for a 10-year period, and then offer them on a subsidised basis to those on the waiting list for affordable housing. The owners will be exempt from tax on the rental income, and the rate paid will increase by a fixed rate of 2% per year. Two more trees are to be uprooted next to the Lija cemetery to facilitate traffic in the area, Transport Malta has confirmed.  The trees ended up rooted below the pavement followed road works and the narrowing of a pavement to try to ease traffic flow in a project where holm oak trees were controversially removed from the same area last July. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias, said today it had taken the last districts in the old city of Raqqa from Islamic State, but the US-led coalition which backs it could not confirm the report. Times of Malta recently carried a story about a Coca Cola truck blocking the promenade near the Torri in Sliema, sparking major complaints.  The picture prompted General Soft Drinks to issue an apology saying the company will take all necessary action to ensure such incidents will not re-occur and that its representatives would "carry out their duties without causing any inconvenience". Following the success of the scrappage scheme launched last January 2017, Transport Malta is extending this scheme for the third time. Another €500,000 has been allocated. Transport Malta will be receiving further applications for the grant which will be processed on a first come first serve basis. The initiative is aimed to encourage people to dispose of their old vehicles and to invest in new cars with lower emissions. A team of artists is celebrating after a Guinness judge confirmed that they had built the tallest sandcastle in the world. The 16.68m Duisburg creation snatched the title from a team of 50 Indians who built a 14.84m castle emblazoned with the words "world peace" earlier this year.
