Iran's supreme leader says he will never negotiate with Trump administration

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, took a page out of President Trump's diplomacy handbook Monday by tweeting his refusal to conduct negotiations with the U.S. Khamenei outlined his disdain for America in a six-part thread on his English-language Twitter account, and he included an infographic detailing the "U.S. formula for negotiation," which slammed the U.S. government for being so focused on "power and money" that they "consider negotiations as a business deal."

Why do we not negotiate with the U.S.? Читать дальше...

Litter-plucking crows get jobs at French theme park

Long gone are the days of carrier pigeons — today, there are cleaning crows. This week, a French theme park will employ a team of birds who have been trained to pick up trash, LiveScience reported Monday.

Not to be confused with the soft rock band of the 1990s, the cleaning crows were raised in captivity and were trained by the park's Academy of Falconry, so they're well-qualified for the job. More specifically, the birds are rooks, a type of bird in the crow family that's especially adept at sorting items.

The rooks have been working hard to learn how to keep the park free of litter, reports AFP, with a trainer who has been working with the species for more than 20 years. Читать дальше...

Meet the pterodactyl's oldest cousin

Before the dinosaurs hit their stride, the Earth may have belonged to a different kind of reptile: the pterosaur.

Paleontologists have discovered a new species of pterosaur, the reptile family to which the famed pterodactyl belongs. Dating back about 210 million years, the bones of Caelestiventus hanseni are changing what we know about these prehistoric creatures.

Caelestiventus hanseni's remains are much older than most other pterosaurs scientist have uncovered — throwing a potential wrench in the evolutionary timeline. Читать дальше...

Socialism is more popular than capitalism among Democrats

Democrats have an increasingly negative view of capitalism. A Gallup poll published Monday found that more Democrats see socialism positively than capitalism, while Republicans largely prefer capitalism.

Gallup has been polling views on the two economic systems since 2010, and this year marks the first time that Democrats prefer socialism by a wide margin. While 57 percent of Democrats said they had a positive view of socialism, fairly consistent with the numbers of previous years, only 47 percent said they had a positive view of capitalism, a significant drop from 2016 when 56 percent viewed it positively.

Conversely, 71 percent of Republicans have positive views of capitalism, with just 16 percent viewing socialism positively. Читать дальше...

Carmelo Anthony is officially a Houston Rocket

Carmelo Anthony officially signed with the Houston Rockets on Monday, in an unsurprising end to weeks of team-shuffling for the 10-time All-Star. Anthony ended last season as a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder, but his one-year stint there came to an end last month after he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks waived his rights and allowed him to become a free agent.

Anthony joins his close friend Chris Paul as well as league MVP James Harden in Texas:

ESPN reported Monday that the Rockets "are expected to bring Anthony off the bench this season" — a notorious sticking point for the scoring forward. Читать дальше...

FBI dismisses Peter Strzok following investigation into anti-Trump texts

Senior FBI agent Peter Strzok has been dismissed from the bureau, his lawyer told The Washington Post on Monday.

Strzok was fired after the FBI's inspector general found he had sent text messages to FBI lawyer Lisa Page that revealed antipathy toward President Trump. In 2016, Strzok told Page "we'll stop" Trump from becoming president. Strzok was involved with the investigation into Russia's election interference, but he testified last month that his personal dislike for Trump did not influence his work; an internal investigation found no evidence otherwise. Glacier National Park is now on fire. Yes, Glacier.

California's raging Mendocino Complex fire isn't the only blaze overtaking the west right now.

Montana's Glacier National Park defied its name over the weekend, hitting a near-record-high 100 degrees, per the Missoula Current. And when lightning struck the dry earth Friday, it sparked another incredible wildfire.

Stephen Miller's uncle slams his nephew's immigration policies as a 'gateway to tyranny'

If Stephen Miller had his way, his own family may never have made it to the U.S.

The senior policy adviser's uncle, David Glosser, told the tale of Miller's immigrant heritage in a Politico article published Monday, revealing that Miller himself is a beneficiary of the immigration programs that he is now dismantling.

"I have watched with dismay and increasing horror as my nephew, who is an educated man and well aware of his heritage, has become the architect of immigration policies that repudiate the very foundation of our family's life in this country," said Glosser. Читать дальше...

Trump says he heard 'bad things' about Omarosa, but wouldn't fire her because 'she only said GREAT things about me'

President Trump is officially declaring war on Omarosa Manigault Newman.

Over the past week, the Apprentice star turned White House aide has popped around the media, spreading harsh accounts of her time in the West Wing. Manigault Newman declared that Trump used the N-word, alleged the president has "mentally declined," and apparently secretly recorded White House Chief of Staff John Kelly in the Situation Room.

Trump finally fired back at Manigault Newman's press whirlwind Monday morning, tweeting that Manigault Newman's dismissal from the White House in December would be the "last time" he fired her. Читать дальше...

The Republican Party declares war on Omarosa

Omarosa Manigault Newman has the GOP on edge.

White House officials say they're "scared sh-tless of her," and it appears the Republican Party establishment is as well. The former Apprentice contestant and senior White House adviser to President Trump is currently promoting a new White House tell-all, Unhinged. The book reportedly makes some stunning claims, calling Trump a "racist, a bigot, and a misogynist," and Manigault Newman made secret recordings to back up her accusations of corruption.

The GOP has responded to the public drama with a brazen campaign of its own, tweeting out several messages intended to discredit the former White House employee. Читать дальше...

Turning off Google's Location History won't stop it from tracking where you are

You can tell Google not to record where you're traveling. It just won't listen.

Maps and other Google apps store location data even if users turn off their Location History, an Associated Press investigation has found. Turning off the feature means "the places you go are no longer stored," Google promises on its support page, but AP has discovered some apps still hold time-stamped locations.

Location is obviously a factor on the Google Maps app, and the company explicitly requests users let the app use their location for navigation. Читать дальше...

Stephen Miller is stealthily killing America's refugee program

President Trump has had two secretaries of state and two secretaries of homeland security, but senior policy adviser Stephen Miller has been in the Trump White House since the beginning. His fingerprints are all over the Trump administration's restrictive immigration policies — like a new proposal to sharply limit legal immigration. But a lot of the time, Abigail Tracy reports at Vanity Fair, Miller wears figurative gloves, as in his shadow campaign to grind refugee resettlement to a halt.

President Trump on Sunday tweeted that it would be "great" if customers boycotted Harley-Davidson. Trump has criticized the iconic American motorcycle maker since it announced in June that it was moving production of motorcycles to be sold in Europe to factories outside the U.S. Harley-Davidson said the move was necessary to avoid European tariffs imposed to retaliate against Trump's tariffs on steel, aluminum, and other products. Trump tweeted that "many" Harley-Davidson owners intended to boycott the company if it went ahead with the production shift. Читать дальше...

A brief white nationalist rally near the White House in Washington, D.C., on Sunday drew only about two dozen participants, demanding "white civil rights." A brief speech by organizer Jason Kessler was drowned out by thousands of counterprotesters chanting "Go home, Nazis!" "No Trump! No KKK! No fascist USA!" and "Black lives matter!" The event was held to mark the one-year anniversary of the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which provoked violence that left one counterprotester dead. Читать дальше...

Meet one of Iraq's secret weapons in the battle against ISIS

Iraq's elite counterterrorism unit the Falcon Intelligence Cell "may be the most important organization on the front lines of the war on terrorism that almost no one has heard of," The New York Times reported Sunday. The agency placed spies inside the Islamic State's ranks and used that human intelligence to capture ISIS leaders and thwart hundreds of ISIS plots. "Its intelligence helped oust the extremists from their last urban strongholds last year and it now aids the hunt for the group's leaders, like Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi," the Times said, focusing on one spy in particular, Capt. Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison denies abuse allegation

On Sunday, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) flatly denied an allegation from the son of an ex-girlfriend that he had physically abused the woman, Karen Monahan. On Saturday, 25-year-old Austin Monahan claimed on Facebook that he found a video last year on his mother's computer of Ellison dragging his mom off a bed by her feet and berating her. "Karen and I were in a long-term relationship which ended in 2016, and I still care deeply for her well-being," Ellison said in the statement. "This video does not exist because I never behaved in this way, and any characterization otherwise is false."

A woman claiming to be Karen Monahan said on Austin Monahan's Facebook page that the video is authentic, but while Karen Monahan shared more than 100 text messages between her and Ellison with Minnesota Public Radio, neither MPR or The Washington Post could confirm such a video exists, despite requests to the Monahans. North and South Korean leaders will meet in September, envoys say

On Monday, negotiators for North and South Korea emerged from two hours of meetings in the border village Panmunjom with news that their countries' leaders would meet for a third summit in September. North Korea's Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in met in April and May, paving the way for Kim's June summit with President Trump.

North Korean reunification official Ri Son Gwon and South Korean Reunification Minister Cho Myoung-Gyon released a three-sentence statement that contained almost no details, and Ri and Cho didn't appear to agree on whether a date has been set for the September summit; Cho said no, and Ri said yes but wouldn't name the date, telling the media he wanted to "keep reporters wondering." Monday's meeting took place amid increasing concerns that the U.S. Читать дальше...

John Oliver explains how to spot 'astroturfing,' admits it isn't easy, warns that cynicism is 'toxic'

On Sunday's Last Week Tonight, John Oliver tackled the phenomenon of "astroturfing," and he kicked it off with a pretty vulgar joke. Then he got down to business: "Astroturfing is the practice of corporations or political groups disguising themselves as spontaneous, authentic popular movements. It's basically fake grassroots — that's why they call it 'astroturfing.'" Some of these campaigns are pretty obvious, he said, playing one example, but "with dark money surging in the wake of decisions like Citizens United, astroturfing techniques are becoming more sophisticated, effective, and dangerous, and they are not going away."

Oliver proposed exploring those techniques "to better spot them in the future," and he started with the nomenclature, specifically the gallingly deceitful names some groups adopt. Читать дальше...

4-year-old adopted girl in Colorado at risk of deportation despite both parents being U.S. citizens

Amy and Marco Becerra are both U.S. citizens, and while they were living in Marco's native Peru — he has dual citizenship — they fostered then adopted an infant girl, Angela. They decided to move back to Colorado so Angela could "have the opportunities that are available here, the education that’s available here," Amy Becerra told Colorado's KDVR News. But because it was a domestic adoption, not an international adoption, they had trouble getting Angela the proper immigration papers. They brought her to Colorado on a tourist visa, which expires at the end of August, and last week, U.S. Читать дальше...

Omarosa apparently secretly recorded John Kelly inside the Situation Room. That doesn't appear to be illegal.

On Sunday, Omarosa Manigault Newman released via NBC News a recording she says secretly captured White House Chief of Staff John Kelly firing her, using thinly veiled threats, inside the Situation Room, one of the most secure rooms in the U.S. government. The recording itself is pretty anodyne, perhaps a little damning for Manigault Newman. But the fact that she recorded it on her cellphone in the Situation Room is alarming, if not, apparently, illegal, assuming she didn't have security clearance.

The White House isn't denying that Kelly took Manigault Newman to the Situation Room to fire her, rather than his office. Читать дальше...

College student picks up a paintbrush, and 9 months later has a major art exhibit

It started as a whim, and turned into an opportunity all artists dream about.

University of Miami student Matthew Hanzman is studying political science, but decided nine months ago that he wanted to "give this art thing a good shot," he told The Miami Herald. The 21-year-old began painting, and now more than 70 of his pieces will be on display at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, where he is the first painter in the Emerging Artists Showcase.

Miami is "eclectic" and "vibrant," Hanzman said, and he told The Miami Herald his artwork "reflects Miami's diversity." One piece, "Forever," is an acrylic on canvas that "demonstrates graffiti, street culture that's not typically associated with fine art," he said. Читать дальше...

Trump says it would be 'great' if Harley-Davidson owners boycott the company

President Trump went on the attack against Harley-Davidson on Sunday, tweeting that it would be "great" if people who already owned their motorcycles boycotted the company.

Trump said that "many @harleydavidson owners plan to boycott the company if manufacturing moves overseas. Great! Most other companies are coming in our direction, including Harley competitors. A really bad move! U.S. will soon have a level playing field, or better."

It was a turnaround from comments Trump made earlier in his presidency, when he called Harley-Davidson a "true American icon." Earlier this summer, after the Trump administration imposed steep steel and aluminum tariffs and the European Union retaliated, Harley-Davidson said it would cost an extra $2,200 to ship each motorcycle to Europe, and they planned on producing bikes headed to Europe at facilities overseas.
