Sainsbury’s shoppers baffled by ‘bargain’ yellow-sticker items just ONE PENNY cheaper
SAINSBURY’S shoppers felt they were being hoodwinked by the supermarket after it marked up sale offers that were only 1p less.
A number of baked goods in the reduced section at the Sainsbury’s in Coldham’s common in Cambridge were branded as “absolute steals”.
One shopper said: “My partner and I had walked to Sainsbury’s at around 5pm to buy some aubergines for dinner. “Unfortunately there weren’t any when we arrived so we walked round to the bakery to see what reduced offers there were.
“At first I was excited to see chocolate croissants reduced, but then I realised it was only by 1p.
“I then noticed another item had also been reduced by this amount.
“We pointed it out to the lady working at the bakery and she laughed and said it was a mistake.”
He also said that he felt a bit let down that Sainbury’s was trying to “fool customers into thinking they were getting a good deal on something”.
He added: “To be fair, I think they changed it after we saw them.”
However the shop recently did a good deed when a woman discovered two £5 Sainsbury’s gift cards from 1988.
Beverly Hardy found her nan’s vouchers in a suitcase and the store agreed to let her use them.
The 64-year-old posted a picture of them on the Sainsbury’s Facebook feed and the supermarket giant replied to say it would replace them. She said: “I just put it out there for a bit of history. I wasn’t expecting anything.”
Her grandmother Mabel Homan died aged 84 in 1989.
The vouchers had been issued the previous December by the Henry Smith Charity, which gives money to the less well-off.
Beverly, of Ascot, Berks, and dad Raymond Homan, 91, discovered them in an envelope in a suitcase untouched for decades.
