War correspondent Ernie Pyle’s legacy more important than ever, officers say at memorial
A Sunday memorial service was held at the spot where famed World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle was felled by a Japanese bullet. Okinawa’s American Legion Post 28 began hosting memorial services in 1952 for Pyle, who was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for chronicling the average American soldier in foxholes across Europe.
