Florida’s citrus industry was dealt a major blow by Hurricane Irma, wiping out lots of orange and grapefruit groves, but that is only the latest of the industry’s many problems. Florida’s citrus industry has already shrunk by 70 percent since 2005 due to citrus greening disease, caused by motile bacteria.
